Houghton Softball Romps (Twice) at Spring Swing – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

On day three of the annual Spring Swing Softball Invitational at the Superior Dome yesterday…
• L’Anse blanked Newberry 14-0.
• Houghton routed Superior Central 12-2, in a game that ended after five innings because of the mercy rule. Stella Suomis gave up just three hits, and struck out seven. Clea Ollanketo homered and scored four runs.
• Negaunee edged Hancock 4-3.
• Hancock lost to Escanaba 18-0.
• Houghton pounded Norway 28-0. The Gremlins ended the game early by scoring 15 runs in the fourth inning. Grace Brunet gave up one hit, struck out eight of the 12 batters she faced, and hit a home run. Bryn Arko homered, and Fayah Zapolnik hit a home run and drove in eight runs.

College Hockey

The NCAA men’s Frozen Four is in place. Yesterday, Michigan edged Penn State 2-1 in overtime to claim the Allentown regional title. The Wolverines will face Quinnipiac in one semifinal Thursday. Quinnipiac claimed the Bridgeport regional with a 4-1 victory over Ohio State. Thursday’s other semifinal will pit Minnesota against Boston University.

College Basketball

The Final Four is in place for the Division I men’s basketball tournament, as well. Florida Atlantic will face San Diego State in one semifinal, with Connecticut taking on Miami in the other. Both games will be played Saturday.

GLHL

The schedule has been announced for the Great lakes Hockey League playoffs, which will be hosted by Calumet this coming weekend.

The Pistons welcome the Bucks tonight. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers wrapped up their Grapefruit League schedule with a wild 11-10 victory over the Rays yesterday. Detroit scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a three-run lead. Tampa Bay tied the game with three in the top of the ninth. Ryan Kreidler singled home Jonathan Davis with the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth. Jonathan Schoop and Riley Greene homered.

The Tigers open the regular season Thursday at Tampa Bay. Coverage will begin at 2:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers played the Diamondbacks to a 4-4 tie yesterday. Brandon Woodruff gave up three runs on three hits over six innings, and Christian Yelich homered.

The Brewers will face the Rockies this afternoon. Eric Lauer will start for Milwaukee.
