Houghton Softball Goes 1-2 at Pulaski Tourney – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school softball Saturday…
• At a tournament at Pulaski, Houghton defeated Coleman 10-0. Estella Soumis struck out 10 and was the winning pitcher. She also drove in two runs. Brynn Arko had a double. The Gremlins fell to the host Red Raiders 12-3. Arko had a single, a double, and two RBI. The Gremlins also lost to Menasha 10-2. Clea Ollanketo and Arko each tripled.

NHL

In opening-round NHL tournament play Saturday…
• The Islanders shaded the Hurricanes 3-2 in double overtime. Carolina leads that series 3-1.
• The Lightning downed the Panthers 6-3. Florida is up 3-1 in that series.
• The Bruins stopped the Maple Leafs 3-1. Boston leads that set 3-1.
• The Stars edged the Golden Knights 3-2. Vegas has a 2-1 lead in that series.

Today…
• The Avalanche welcome the Jets. Colorado leads that series 2-1.
• The Canucks visit the Predators. Vancouver leads that set 2-1.
• The Capitals host the Rangers. New York is up 3-0 in that series.
• The Kings entertain the Oilers. Edmonton leads that series 2-1.

NBA

In opening-round NBA tournament play Saturday…
• The Magic shut down the Cavaliers 112-89. That series is tied 2-2.
• The Thunder stifled the Pelicans 106-85. Oklahoma City is up 3-0 in that set.
• The Celtics turned down the Heat 104-84. Boston takes a 2-1 series lead.
• The Lakers held off the Nuggets 119-108. Denver leads that set 3-1.

Today…
• The Knicks visit the 76ers. New York leads that series 2-1.
• The Mavericks entertain the Clippers. Dallas leads that set 2-1.
• The Pacers welcome the Bucks. Indiana is up 2-1 in that series.
• The Suns host the Timberwolves. Minnesota leads that series 3-0.

MLB

Matt Vierling’s two-run homer capped a five-run seventh inning, and the Tigers held on to edge the Royals 6-5 Saturday. Kansas City took an early lead, with three runs off Casey Mize in the first two innings. Mize went on to pitch through the fifth. Vierling’s homer gave Detroit a three-run lead, but KC scored two off Jason Foley in the ninth, before Vinnie Pasquantino flied out to center field to secure the win.

The Tigers host the Royals again this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will start against Michael Wacha. Coverage will start at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers suffered an ugly 15-3 loss to the Yankees. Joe Ross struggled through five innings, allowing seven runs. The Bronx Bombers eventually pounded out 19 hits. Rhys Hoskins homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers host the Yankees again today. Marcus Stroman will pitch against Tobias Myers.

Milwaukee has called pitcher Janson Junk back up from Nashville. Pitcher Jared Koenig has been sent down.

NFL

The Lions split their final four draft picks between offense and defense Saturday. After making a couple of trades, in the fourth round, they chose offensive tackle Giovanni Manu from British Columbia and Sione Vaki from Utah, who is listed as a safety, but has also played at running back. In the fifth round, they claimed LSU defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo. In the sixth, they took Boston College offensive guard Christian Mahogany.

The Packers had six third-day picks. They used them on Oregon Safety Evan Williams in the fourth round, Duke center Jacob Monk and Oregon safety Kitan Oladapo in the fifth, Georgia State offensive tackle Travis Glover in the sixth, and Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt and Penn State cornerback Kalen King in the seventh.
