Houghton Softball, Baseball Earn Sweeps – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Houghton took two from Calumet, 11-1 and 5-4. In the second game, the Gremlins scored three runs in the final inning to come from behind, aided by four Copper Kings errors.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Ontonagon 14-4 and 14-3.

On the baseball schedule today…
• Jeffers visits Gogebic.
• L’Anse entertains Negaunee.

In high school softball yesterday…
• Houghton routed Gogebic 13-0 and 24-2.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Ironwood 22-2 and 8-4. Olivia Shank was the winning pitcher in both games. She also had two singles and two doubles in the opener, and an inside-the-park home run in the nightcap. Becca Lyons three singles in the opener, and Emily Jokela had a pair of triples in the second game.

On the softball schedule today…
• The Iron Mountain at L’Anse games have been called off. They hope to make them up, but no date has been set.
• Hancock welcomes Gwinn.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team finally concluded their games at Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a pair of losses yesterday, 17-9 and 11-1. Chance White and Brandon Gaskin each had two hits for the Lions.

NHL

The opening round of the NHL playoffs continued last night.

In the Eastern Conference…
• The Carolina Hurricanes outscored the Boston Bruins 5-2. Carolina leads that series 2-0.
• The Tampa Bay Lightning got past the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3. That set is tied 1-1.

In the Western Conference…
• The Minnesota Wild blasted the Saint Louis Blues 6-2. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Edmonton Oilers blanked the Los Angeles Kings 6-0. That set is knotted at 1-1.

In the Eastern Conference tonight…
• The Pittsburgh Penguins visit the New York Rangers. Pittsburgh is up 1-0 in that set.
• The Florida Panthers entertain the Washington Capitals. Washington leads that series 1-0.

In the Western Conference this evening…
• The Colorado Avalanche host the Nashville Predators. Colorado leads that set 1-0.
• The Dallas Stars visit the Calgary Flames. Calgary has a 1-0 lead in that series.

NBA

In NBA conference semifinal play last night…
• In the Eastern Conference, the Miami Heat downed the Philadelphia 76ers 119-103. Miami leads that series 2-0.
• In the Western Conference, the Phoenix Suns defeated the Dallas Mavericks 129-109. Phoenix leads that set 2-0.

No games will be played tonight.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers split their doubleheader with the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday.

In the opening game, the Tigers gave up two runs in the top of the fifth, then scored three times in the bottom of the inning, and held on for a 3-2 victory. Detroit’s final two runs scored when Pittsburgh third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes misplayed a ground ball off the bat of Javier Báez.

In the nightcap, Pittsburgh scored two in the seventh and three in the ninth to close out a 7-2 victory. In his first major league appearance, starter Alex Faedo gave up two runs on eight hits over five innings.

The Tigers visit the Houston Astros tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against José Urquidy. Coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift. 

Detroit catcher Dustin Garneau has cleared waivers, and been assigned to Toledo.

The Milwaukee Brewers routed the Cincinnati Reds 18-4 last night. Rowdy Tellez hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and Kolton Wong knocked one out. Tellez set a new franchise record with eight runs batted in. Freddy Peralta allowed three runs over five innings, and got the win.

The Brewers will entertain the Reds again this afternoon. Adrian Houser will pitch against Hunter Greene.
