Houghton Romps in Wing Ding Hockey Game – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
• Houghton smothered Hancock 8-0 in the annual Wing Ding game. The contest ended after two periods because of the mercy rule. Landon Stevens had four goals and two assists for the Gremlins. Camden Markham had two goals and three assists. Mike Maillette scored twice, and Gab Carlson had four assists. Bryant Lee earned his fifth shutout of the season. The Gremlins improve to 22-1.
• Jeffers defeated Mount Pleasant 7-0 in their opening game at the Cheboygan Invitational. The Jets face Gladwin in Cheboygan today.

In boys basketball last night…
• Calumet stopped West Iron County 47-30. Brayden Nelson scored 14 for the Copper Kings.
• Jeffers shut down Republic-Michigamme 78-30. Matthew Schutz scored 20 for the Jets, and Levi Frahm added 16. Jeffers improves to 16-0.
• Baraga fell to North Dickinson 62-40.
• Ontonagon v Wakefield-Marenisco – no report.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell downed Chassell 57-36. Gabe Popko of the Lakes led all scorers with 17.

On the girls schedule…
• Calumet handed Escanaba its first loss of the season, 59-57.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City dropped a 51-50 heartbreaker at Wakefield-Marenisco.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell outscored Chassell 58-39. Emily Jokela scored 28 for the Lakes. Trish Pietila had 16 points for the Panthers.

In girls basketball today…
• Houghton plays at West Iron County in a make-up from January 19th.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Davenport University this afternoon.

Both Northern teams play at Grand Valley today.

The Finlandia men’s team lost 69-66 at Andrews University yesterday afternoon. A John Schutz jump shot pulled the Lions within one point in the closing seconds, but the Cardinals sank a couple late free throws to seal the win. The Lions face Kent State-Tuscarawas today, in a game that will also be played at Andrews University in Berrien Springs.

The Finlandia women’s team overwhelmed Mount Mary 102-62 last night. Natalie Bartle scored 36 for the Lions. The women’s team plays at Maranatha Baptist this evening.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team fell 5-2 to Bowling Green in the opening game of the Winter Carnival series last night. Kyle Kukkonen scored both Huskies goals. Blake Pietila made 23 saves, and took the loss in net. Those teams skate again tonight at 5:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The Northern Michigan hockey team blanked St. Thomas 3-0 last night. Those teams meet again tonight in Mendota Heights.

The Finlandia University men’s team earned a 4-3 overtime victory over Concordia-Wisconsin yesterday. Matteo Ybarra and Nate Holm scored early for the Lions. Owen Schmidt’s goal late in the third period forced extra time. Max Messier scored off the opening overtime faceoff to win it.

The Lions wrap up their season against Concordia-Wisconsin today at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team hosts Marian University tomorrow night and Monday afternoon.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines both have the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Canucks this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 11:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons outlasted the Spurs 138-131 in double overtime last night. Bojan Bogdanovic led Detroit with 32 points, and Jalen Duren added 30.

The Pistons visit the Raptors tomorrow afternoon.

NFL

The Eagles and Chiefs meet in the Super Bowl tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 3:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

Nordic Skiing

The annual Barneløpet will be held tomorrow, featuring Nordic ski races for children ages 3 through 17 at the Maasto Hiihto Trails. Registration begins at 1:00 in the chalet in Hancock. Races start at 2:00. There is no entry fee. For more details and registration information, click here.
