Houghton Retains Copper Bowl – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…
• Houghton used a strong second half to claim a 28-6 victory over Hancock in the annual Copper Bowl game. The Gremlins held a narrow 8-6 halftime lead. Houghton concludes its season with a record of 3-6, with two of those wins over Hancock. The Bulldogs finish at 1-8.
• Calumet closed its season with a 51-6 loss at Charlevoix. The Rayders scored on their first two possessions. Calumet responded with a 55-yard touchdown drive, capped by a one-yard Alan Bjorn plunge, that was set up when Eric Loukus intercepted a Brady Jess pass. It was all Charlevoix after that, as the Rayders scored on every subsequent possession until the final kneel-down. Calumet finishes its season with a record of 3-6, and misses the playoffs for the first time since 2013. Hear the game replay here. • Lake Linden-Hubbell routed Ontonagon 50-6. Sammy Roberts rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Danny Marcotte ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns. The Lakes end their regular season with a record of 6-3. Playoff pairings will be announced tomorrow by the Michigan High School Athletics Association.

The U.P. Cross Country Finals will be run today at Gladstone.

College Hockey

The 17th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team’s early-season struggles continued last night, with a 4-2 loss to Wisconsin. Goals from Ryland Mosely and Isaac Gordon gave the Huskies an early lead, but the Badgers used a strong finish to claim the win. Blake Pietila made 18 saves. Tech remains winless, and hosts Wisconsin again tonight at 6:07.

The Northern Michigan hockey team fell 3-2 at 18th-ranked at Arizona State last night. Those teams face off again this evening.

College Football

The MTU football team hosts Ferris State today at 1:00.

The NMU football squad entertains Grand Valley State.

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team pulled out a 3-1 victory at Saginaw Valley State last night. Kaycee Meiners had a career-best 17 kills, and Tess Hayes had 49 assists and 12 digs. The Huskies play at Wayne State today.

The Northern volleyball team fell 3-0 at Wayne State last night, and plays at Saginaw Valley State today.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team got past Parkside 3-2 yesterday. Taylor Noble and Cassie Bonifas scored for the Huskies, and freshman Brooke Green netted the game-winner. Tech visits Purdue Northwest tomorrow.

The Northern women’s team shaded Purdue Northwest 1-0 yesterday afternoon, and visits Parkside tomorrow.

The Northern men’s team hosts Saint Cloud State tomorrow afternoon.

NHL

The Red Wings entertain the Senators this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings now say Robby Fabbri’s lower body injury could keep him out for a month or more. Jonatan Berggren has been called up from Grand Rapids to fill in.

NBA

The Pistons concluded their preseason campaign with a 114-104 loss at Dallas last night. Malcolm Cazalon led Detroit with 16 points, as many of the regulars saw little or no playing time. Listen for selected regular-season Pistons games on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

In the American League Championship series, the Astros edged the Rangers 3-2. Houston leads that series 3-2, and will host game six tomorrow night.

In the National League Championship Series, the Diamondbacks came from behind to shade the Phillies 6-5. That series is tied 2-2, with game five tonight in Arizona.

The Brewers have assigned pitcher Eric Lauer to their Nashville Triple-A team, after no other team claimed him on waivers. Lauer struggled this season, with a 6.56 earned run average. Lauer could elect to become a free agent.

NFL

The Lions visit the Ravens for a 1:00 game tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs will return to the lineup for Detroit, but running back Davis Montgomery will miss the game because of the rub injury he suffered last week.

The Packers travel to Denver for a 4:25 contest tomorrow.
