High School
In the girls’ high school basketball tournament Friday night…
– In Class B, Houghton won the District title with a 42-28 victory over Escanaba. The Gremlins’ defense held the Eskymos to just two points in the first quarter, and never let Escanaba back into the game. Houghton will face Kalkaska in the Regional semifinal Tuesday night at 7:00 at Sault Ste. Marie. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
– In Class D, Lori Wardynski’s off-balance layup with one second remaining Ontonagon a 38-36 victory over Jeffers in the title game. The Jets trailed by 10 at halftime, but came back to take a brief late lead. Wardynski led all scorers with 22 points. Alexa Clouthier scored 17 for the Jets. The Gladiators will face Forest Park in the Regional semifinal Tuesday night at 6:00 at Kingsford.

Conference champion Lake Linden-Hubbell dominated the Copper Country Conference Boys All-Star Team announced Friday. Brett Poissant of the Lakes was named Most Valuable Player. Lake Linden’s Jack Kumpula was selected as Coach of the Year. Teammates Tyler Roose and Arthur Lyons made the First Team, along with Baraga’s Brendan Varline. Second team honorees included Zach Nichols from Jeffers, Taylor Beaudry from Ontonagon, Lars Daavettila from Chassell, and Devin Schmitz from Dollar Bay. Honorable mention votes went to Jeffers’ Brant Ryynanen, Baraga’s Austin Smith, and Lake Linden’s Lucas Klein.
WCHA Hockey
Blake Pietila and Tyler Heinonen each scored twice, as the Michigan Tech hockey team defeated Northern Michigan 5-1 Friday night. Jamie Phillips made 20 saves to earn the win. The Huskies and Wildcats wrap up their regular hockey seasons tonight in Marquette.
WCHA leader Minnesota State lost to Bemidji State 5-2 Friday night. That leaves Michigan Tech just one point out of first place. The Huskies could win the regular-season crown if they win tonight, and MSU falls again.
GLIAC Hoops Tourney
The top-seeded Michigan Tech women’s basketball team faces fourth-seed Grand Valley State in the semifinals of the GLIAC tournament today at noon. Third-seeded Ashland takes on seventh-seed Walsh at 2:30. The semifinal winners will meet for the GLIAC Tournament Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament tomorrow at 2:00.
Danielle Blake and Jillian Richie were both named to the All-GLIAC First Team Friday. Both were also named to the All-Defensive Team Huskies’ coach Kim Cameron was named Coach of the Year. Alyssa Colla and Lauren Gruber of Northern Michigan University were also named to the First Team and All-Defensive Team. See the full list of honorees here.
Finlandia
The Finlandia baseball team wrapped up its Florida trip Friday with a 25-3 loss to John Carroll University.
The Finlandia softball team defeated Potsdam State University 5-3 on Friday. Amanda Youker had two hits, and drove in two runs for the Lions. Nicole Dall scattered six hits over seven innings for the win. Finlandia’s game against Susquehanna University was canceled. The Lions have today off, and continue their Florida schedule tomorrow with games against the University of Rochester and Saint Mary’s College from Indiana.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the West Bend Bombers 13-5 Friday night. The Pioneers skate at Fond du Lac tonight. The Calumet Wolverines dropped a 7-4 decision at Fond du Lac Friday night, and skate at West Bend tonight.
NHL – Red Wings Burned by Flames
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Calgary Flames 5-2 Friday night. Justin Abdelkader scored both Detroit goals in the opening period. Former Wing Jiri Hudler scored twice for Calgary. The Wings skate at Boston tomorrow afternoon. Face-off is at 12:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Fall to Rockets
The Detroit Pistons lost their fifth straight game Friday night, 103-93 at Houston. James Harden had 38 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists for the Rockets. Greg Monroe scored 19 points for the Pistons, and Reggie Jackson added 17. The Pistons host the Hornets Sunday night. Tip-off is at 6:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers fell to the Mets 5-4 Friday. David Price tossed two shutout innings for Detroit. Shortstop Jose Iglesias left the game with a bruised shin, but said he doesn’t believe it will sideline him. The Tigers play the Braves this afternoon.
Matt Garza gave up five hits in his first spring start, and the Brewers fell to the Dodgers 10-1. The Brewers face the Rangers this afternoon.
NFL
The Detroit Lions signed kicker Matt Prater to a three-year contract extension Friday. They also re-signed third-string quarterback Kellen Moore to a two-year deal.
Great Bear Chase Today
The U.P. Health System Great Bear Chase will be held today on the Swedetown Trails. Events include 10, 25, and 50-k Freestyles and Classics, along with a 50-k Skiathlon.
