Houghton, LL-H Girls Earn Track Wins – Friday Sports Update

High School

In high school baseball this afternoon…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell opens its first baseball campaign with a doubleheader at L’Anse. Pregame coverage begins at 3:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Calumet visits Northland Pines.

In softball today…
– Calumet plays at Northland Pines.
– Hancock travels to Rapid River.
– Jeffers entertains the Gogebic Miners.

The Houghton girls track team won the four-team meet at Negaunee yesterday. Calumet finished fourth. On the boys side, Calumet placed third, and Houghton fourth. Individual results were not provided.

At the Division Three Dome meet yesterday, the Lake Linden-Hubbell girls took first place. Ontonagon finished third, Chassell fifth, and Baraga 13th. The Panthers won the 3200-meter relay and the 3600 medley. Mariah Willmer took the 400-meter dash, Jamie Hendrickson won the high jump, and MacKenzie LePage won the pole vault. Ontonagon took the 1600-meter relay, and Nicole Lukkari from the Gladiators won the 55-meter hurdles.

Bessemer claimed an easy victory in the boys meet, with Lake Linden-Hubbell third, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fifth, Ontonagon seventh, Chassell 14th, and Baraga 16th.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University softball team swept its doubleheader against Northland College yesterday afternoon, 7-3 and 12-1. Denia Bent went the distance for the win in the opener, and Harlie Caster scored three runs. In the nightcap, Frannette Fernandez allowed just one hit to get the win. Rheanna Bain drove in three runs.

The Lions baseball team heads to Wisconsin-Platteville for doubleheaders tomorrow and Sunday.

MLB

Jordan Zimmermann struggled again, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Boston Red Sox 7-3 last night. Zimmermann gave up five runs before leaving after the third inning because of elbow discomfort. Detroit scored all of its runs in the third inning, on a Jeimer Candelario single and a Nicholas Castellanos home run.

The Tigers begin a series against the White Sox in Chicago tonight. Daniel Norris will start against Carlos Rodón. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Zimmermann will be evaluated today. The Tigers have already lost starters Michael Fulmer and Matt Moore for the season because of injuries. Meanwhile, shortstop Jordy Mercer has been sent to the Lakeland Flying Tigers for a rehab assignment. He’s recovering from a right quad strain.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and will play the Mets in New York tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Jacob deGrom.

NHL

In the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs last night…
– The Boston Bruins edged the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 in overtime. Boston leads that second-round series 1-0.
– The Saint Louis Blues got past the Dallas Stars 3-2. Saint Louis is up 1-0 in that set.

On tonight’s schedule…
– The Carolina Hurricanes visit the New York Islanders.
– The San Jose Sharks host the Colorado Avalanche.
It’s the first game for each of those series.

NBA

In NBA playoff action last night…
– The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Denver Nuggets 120-103. That series is tied 3-3.

Tonight, the Golden State Warriors visit the Los Angeles Clippers. Golden State leads that series 3-2.

NFL

The Arizona Cardinals opened the NFL Draft last night by selecting Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray. With the eighth pick, the Detroit Lions chose Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson. The Green Bay Packers used the 12th selection on Michigan defensive end Rashan Gary, then traded up to get Maryland safety Darnell Savage with the 21st pick.

The draft continues tonight. In the second round, the Lions pick 11th, and the Packers 12th. In the third round, the Packers have the 12th pick and the Lions the 25th.

Sisu Shuffle

The annual Sisu Shuffle will begin tomorrow at 10:00 at the U.P. Health System-Portage Hancock campus. The shuffle is a fun, family-oriented 5k run/walk. There is no charge, but registration is required. Sign up online here, or tomorrow morning on-site beginning at 9:30.
