High School

In high school softball yesterday…
• Houghton dropped two games at Gladstone, 10-0 and 10-5. The Gremlins collected just two hits in the opener. The Braves got off to a quick start in game two, as well. The Houghton offense finally broke through in the fifth inning, scoring five runs with just two hits, but the rally fell short.
• Calumet v Gwinn – no report.
• The Jeffers game at Lake Linden-Hubbell was postponed.
• L’Anse v Gogebic – no report
• Ontonagon v Ironwood – no report

On the softball schedule today, weather and conditions permitting…
• Houghton hosts Marquette.
• Hancock’s game at Minocqua has been canceled.

In baseball yesterday…
• Houghton split its games at Marquette, falling 7-5 in the opener, and taking the nightcap 12-11.
• Calumet v Hancock – no report.
• The Lake Linden-Hubbell game at Jeffers was postponed.
• L’Anse v Gogebic – no report.
• Ewen-Trout Creek dropped both of its games against Ironwood, 13-6 and 20-6.

Houghton and Lake Linden-Hubbell dominated the Lakes Invitational track meet yesterday.
• On the boys side, the Gremlins took first place, with the Lakes second. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished a distant third, followed by Hancock, Jeffers and Chassell. Houghton’s Luke Hill claimed the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Brody Mattila took the long jump, and the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. For Lake Linden, Matthew Jokela won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes.
• On the girls side, the Lakes took top honors, with Houghton second. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was again a distant third, followed by Hancock, Jeffers and Chassell. Emily Jokela took the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes, and the 300-meter hurdles for Lake Linden. Maddy Dudenas claimed the shot put and the discus throw, and Abi Codere won the 110-meter hurdles and the pole vault. Tessa Rautiola of the Gremlins won the 1600 and 3200-meter runs.

At the Baraga Early Bird meet…
• On the boys side, Bessemer logged a narrow victory over Ironwood. Calumet placed third, followed by Ontonagon, L’Anse, Baraga and Watersmeet. Individual winners from local teams included Nate Sterbenz from Baraga in the discus throw, Nolan Hendrickson from Baraga in the high jump, and Calumet’s Brayden Krans in the long jump.
• On the girls side, Ironwood took top honors, with Calumet second. Ontonagon was third, followed by Baraga, Bessemer and L’Anse. Individual winners from local teams included Calumet’s Caitlin Strom in the long jump and the pole vault, Baraga’s Reese Holley in the discus throw, Baraga’s Ellie Delene in the 100-meter hurdles, Ontonagon’s Kylee Uotila in the 300-meter hurdles, and Violet Amos from Ontonagon, who won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes.

In opening-round NHL tournament play last night…
• Pius Suter’s goal with 99 seconds remaining in regulation gave the Canucks a 1-0 win over the Predators. Vancouver takes that series 4-2.
• The Golden Knights blanked the Stars 2-0. That series is tied 3-3.

Tonight…
• The Bruins host the Maple Leafs. That set is tied 3-3.

NBA

In opening-round NBA tournament play last night…
• The Magic stopped the Cavaliers 103-96. That series is tied 3-3.
• The Mavericks dispatched the Clippers 114-101. Dallas wins that series 4-2.

The Western Conference semifinals open tonight…
• The Nuggets welcome the Timberwolves.

MLB

The Yankees scored two runs off Jason Foley, and shaded the Tigers 2-1 last evening. The late meltdown spoiled an otherwise exceptional night for the Tigers hurlers. Reese Olson gave up two runs over five innings. Alex Faedo, Andrew Chafin and Shelby Miller held New York hitless in their combined three innings of work.

The Tigers visit the Yankees again today. Casey Mize will start against Clarke Schmidt. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning, and earned a 3-1 victory over the Cubs. Those teams play again today in Chicago. Tobias Myers will pitch against Jameson Taillon.

Joey Weimer left last night’s game with a knee injury, after slipping while making a play in left field. He’ll be evaluated today.
