Houghton, Jeffers Advance in Baseball Tourney – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

Area high school baseball regional semifinals were played yesterday.

In Division Three…
• Houghton defeated Gladstone 4-1.
• Standish-Sterling swamped Beaverton 19-7.
The Gremlins and Panthers will play for the regional title Saturday at Harbor Springs High School. Coverage will begin at 9:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

In Division Four…
• Jeffers ousted Norway 4-1.
• Johannesburg-Lewiston blanked Alcona 10-0.
The Jets and Cardinals will meet for the regional title Saturday at 10:00 at Rudyard High School.

The Division Four softball regional will be played Saturday at Norway…
• Hancock plays Pickford in the first semifinal. Coverage will begin at 10:40 on KBear 102.3.
• Ishpeming takes on Norway in the second semifinal.
• The championship match is scheduled to start at 5:00 Eastern Time. We’ll broadcast it on KBear 102.3 if the Bulldogs advance.

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League action last night…
• Bucko’s/Labatts lost 22-14 to Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics, then defeated Downtowner Two 27-18.
• McGann’s/Northern Auto v Sayen’s Auto/Coca Cola – no report. McGann’s defeated Koppers 22-3.

NMU

Northern Michigan University has introduced this year’s inductees into the NMU Sports Hall of Fame. The class of 2022 includes…
• 1990s football quarterback Matt Hoard,
• Early 2000s tennis stars Vesselina Jeliazkova and Kristin Koopmann,
• Late 1980s basketball standout Tammie Anderson Mrzchek,
• 1981 CCHA Player of the Year Jeff Pyle,
• Early 1960s track star Alvin Washington, and
• The 1978-79 wrestling team.

The induction ceremony will take place September 23rd.

NHL

The NHL Eastern Conference championship series continues tonight, as the Rangers host the Lightning. The series is tied 2-2.

NBA

In the NBA championship series, the Celtics upended the Warriors 116-100 last night, to take a 2-1 series lead. Game four will be played Friday in Boston.

MLB

The Tigers completed a two-game series sweep of the Pirates with a 3-1 victory yesterday. Alex Faedo gave up a run on three hits over five innings, and struck out seven. Miguel Cabrera singled home with the winning run in the top of the eighth. Daz Cameron drove in two runs with a triple and a double.

The Tigers have today off, and host the Blue Jays tomorrow night. Elvin Rodriguez will pitch against José Berríos. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers’ losing streak reached five games with an ugly 10-0 loss to the Phillies last night. Philadelphia racked up 14 hits, including four home runs. The Crew collected just four singles.

The Brewers host the Phillies again this afternoon. Corbin Burnes will start against Zach Eflin.

Fishing

The annual Rice Lake Fishing Derby will take place Sunday. This is a family event, with fishing for northern pike and walleye open from 7:00 until 4:00. The entry fee is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for juniors and $1.00 for children. 

Registration will be open at the Lake Linden-Hubbell Sportsmen’s Association clubhouse on Rice Lake Road Saturday evening between 6:00 and 8:00, and Sunday between 7:00 am and 1:00 pm. For more details, click here.
