Houghton, Howell to Meet in MacInnes Final – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
Houghton and Howell will play for the championship of the MacInnes Holiday Hockey Classic tonight.

The Gremlins advanced with a 4-2 victory over Calumet. Brad Gauthier had a hat trick for Houghton, and Jimmy Pietila made 33 saves. Dean Loukus and Scott Loukus scored for the Copper Kings.

Howell broke open a tie game with four goals in the third period, and defeated Hancock 6-2. Petr Anderson scored both Bulldogs’ goals.

Hancock and Calumet will face off in the consolation match tonight at 6:00 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Houghton and Howell will begin the title tilt at 8:00. Our pregame coverage will begin at 5:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Please remember the winter clothing drive being held in conjunction with the MacInnes tourney. New or gently used coats, hats, mittens, snowpants, scarves, boots and other winter clothing can be dropped off at the arena tonight between 5:30 and 8:30. Donation boxes will be set up both inside and outside the building.

High school basketball resumes with a couple of games tonight…
– The Hancock boys tip off at Chassell.
– The Hancock girls travel to Westwood.

The Hancock Athletic Boosters will host their annual Basketball Alumni Game tomorrow at 1:00 in the Hancock High School Gymnasium. The game will include volunteer officials, former players and coaches, and current players and coaches for both boys and girls. Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team faces DePauw University at the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, Indiana this afternoon. The Lions will face either Franklin College or Thomas More University tomorrow.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team will take on the University of Michigan in the opening round of the Great Lakes Invitational Tournament Sunday afternoon at 1:00 in Detroit. Michigan State University will face Lake Superior State University in the other semifinal at 4:00. The consolation and championship games will be played on Monday.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines will face off tomorrow night at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 last night. Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athansiou scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 35 saves, and took the loss. The Wings visit the Dallas Stars tomorrow night. Coverage begins at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Indiana Pacers tonight. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
The Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers will wrap up their 2018 NFL seasons against each other at Lambeau Field in a 1:00 game Sunday. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

Curling
The Copper Country Curling Club is hosting two open houses for the public to try the sport. Events will be held at the Drill House Rink on tomorrow from noon until 3:00; and Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 9:00. The rink is located behind Calumet High School, adjacent to the school parking lot. There is no charge, and all you need to bring is a pair of clean tennis shoes.
