In high school football Friday night…
– Houghton scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half, and retained possession of the Copper Bowl with a 36-14 victory over Hancock. The Bulldogs led 14-6 at halftime, after Chase Anderson picked up a mishandled Houghton lateral and ran it in for a score, and Carter Nettell hit Chad Raasio with an 11-yard scoring strike. Houghton’s only first half touchdown came on a seven-yard run by Sam Collaer. The second half was all Houghton – quarterback Jordan Reynolds completed two touchdown passes to Hunter Richards (26 yards and 14 yards, and one to Sean Hyslop (six yards). Collaer dove over the line from one yard out for his second score of the night. Houghton finishes the season at 4-5 (4-2, third place in WestPAC). Hancock ends at 1-8 (1-5, sixth place in WestPAC) – the worst record for the Bulldogs since they were winless in 2002.
– Calumet tuned up for the playoffs with a 27-7 victory over Gladstone. Hear all of the Copper Kings’ playoff games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– L’Anse lost at Munising 41-8. The Purple Hornets conclude the season at 5-4 (5-1, second place in WestPAC).
– Ewen-Trout Creek lost to Rapid River 58-26. The Panthers close their season at 2-7 (2-5 in the Western Eight).

Today…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell tries to wrap up an unbeaten regular season at home against Forest Park. Our pregame broadcast starts around 1:10 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Ontonagon entertains Engadine.
– Baraga visits Superior Central.

The U.P. cross country championship meet will be run today at the Beauchamp Farm in Gladstone.

The 16th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team lost 4-1 at Northern Michigan University Friday night. Michael Neville scored Tech’s only goal, and Jamie Phillips made 42 saves in the losing effort. The Wildcats outshot the Huskies 46-21. Those two teams play again tonight in Houghton. Faceoff is at 7:07 at MacInnes Arena.

The MTU soccer team defeated Northwood 2-1 Friday night. Madeline Faust and Lexi Herrewig scored for the Huskies. Tech will host Saginaw Valley State tomorrow at noon.

The MTU volleyball team got past Tiffin 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 26-24, 24-20) Friday night. The Huskies play at Ohio Dominican this afternoon.

The MTU Cross Country teams run at the GLIAC Championship meet in Detroit today.

The 16th-ranked MTU football team plays at third-ranked Ferris State this afternoon.

The Northern Michigan University football team entertains Ashland this afternoon.

The Finlandia University volleyball team defeated Mount Mary University 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 26-24, 25-19) Friday, then beat Grace Bible College 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-18).

The Finlandia men’s soccer team blanked Iowa Wesleyan College 3-0 Friday afternoon. Jonathan Barnes broke a scoreless tie with the game-winner at 67:11. The Lions play at Webster University tomorrow at noon. The women’s soccer team visits Maranatha Bible University this afternoon.

The Finlandia football team entertains Trinity Bible College today.

The Detroit Red Wings suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames Friday night. The Wings led 2-1 in the first period, but were shut down by Calgary goalie Jonas Hiller the rest of the way. Jimmy Howard stopped 40 shots in net for Detroit. The Wings are back on the ice at Vancouver tonight. Faceoff is at 10:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons closed their preseason schedule with a 115-87 victory over the Atlanta Hawks Friday night. Stanley Johnson scored 20 points and Marcus Morris added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Detroit. Both teams rested many of their regulars. The Pistons open their regular season Wednesday night at home against the Utah Jazz. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

MLB
The World Series pairing is set. The Kansas City Royals won the American League Championship Series with a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in game six. The Royals will host the New York Mets in the opening game of the fall classic Tuesday night.

NFL
The Detroit Lions host the Minnesota Vikings tomorrow. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The Packers have the week off.
