Houghton Hockey Win Streak Ends with Tie – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
• Houghton and Northville skated to a 1-1 tie. Mike Maillette put the Gremlins on the board late in the second period. The Mustangs tied it early in the third. The Gremlins remain unbeaten, but fall to 17-0-1 on the season.
• Hancock took advantage of a quick start, and defeated Grandville 4-2.

In girls basketball Saturday…
• Hancock lost to Escanaba 49-30.

The Houghton swim team at the Marquette Splash and Dash Saturday – no report.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team claimed a 63-51 victory at Purdue Northwest Saturday. Alyssa Wypych scored 17 for the Huskies. Isabella Lenz added 15.

The Tech men’s team fell to the Pride 79-70. Dan Gherezgher paced the Huskies with 22 points.

The Northern women’s team quickly overcame a slow start, and surged past Parkside 83-76 Saturday. After trailing by seven at the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats outscored the Rangers 28-6 in the second frame. Jacy Weisbrod scored a career-best 27 points. MaKaylee Kuhn added 20.

The Northern men’s team won its 11th straight game, with a narrow 61-58 victory at Parkside. Max Weisbrod led the Wildcats with 20 points. Sam Schultz added 15 points, and grabbed 13 rebounds. Dylan Kuehl sank two free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team fell behind early, then scored two third-period goals to salvage a 2-2 tie against Bemidji State Saturday evening. Tyrone Bronte found the net late in the third period, and Matthew Campbell’s goal with 4.9 seconds left in regulation forced what turned out to be a scoreless overtime. The Beavers earned the extra standings point with a 2-1 win in the shootout.

The Northern Michigan hockey squad settled for a split in their weekend series against St. Thomas, falling 3-1 Saturday evening.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines v the Santa Rosa Growlers Saturday – not reported.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Lightning tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons dropped a 141-135 shootout to the Bucks Saturday. With Cade Cunningham still recovering from his strained knee, Alec Burks led Detroit with 33 points. Ausar Thompson added a career-high 22.

The Pistons entertain the Bucks again Monday night. Coverage will start at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

In NFL playoff action Saturday…
• The Ravens advanced with a 34-10 victory over the Texans.
• The Packers’ season ended with a hard-fought 24-21 loss to the 49ers. Christian McCaffrey’s second touchdown of the night, with 67 seconds remaining in the game, provided the winning margin. Jordan Love threw two touchdown passes, but also tossed two interceptions. The San Francisco defense held Green Bay’s running game to just 53 yards.

• The Lions welcome the Buccaneers for a 3:00 match.
• The Bills host the Chiefs in a 6:30 tilt.
