Houghton Hockey Suffers First Loss – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton and Calumet opened play at the Trenton Showcase yesterday…
• Calumet lost to East Grand Rapids 3-0.
• Houghton suffered its first loss of the season. The second-ranked Gremlins fell to top-ranked Detroit Catholic Central 5-2.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams welcome Saginaw Valley State this afternoon – the women at 1:00, and the men at 3:00.

Both Northern Michigan teams entertain Wayne State today.

Both Finlandia basketball teams have the weekend off.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team blanked Bemidji State 2-0 last night. Jack Works netted the game-winner in the second period. Nick Nardella’s empty-netter sealed the win. Blake Pietila recorded his eighth shutout of the season, and the 18th of his college career. Those teams skate in Minnesota again tonight.

Lake Superior State scored three unanswered goals in the third period, and came from behind to defeat Northern Michigan 4-2. Those teams face off again tonight in Marquette.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 5-1 to Marian last night. Max Messier scored the Lions’ only goal, as Finlandia was outshot 39-17. Those teams meet again this afternoon at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

The Finlandia women’s team has the weekend off.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers swamped the Marquette Mutineers 7-0 last night. They’ll host the Fox Cities Ice Dogs this evening at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

The Calumet Wolverines overpowered the Ice Dogs 15-3 last night.

NHL

The Wings are off for the all-star break, and will return to action February 7th, with a home game against the Oilers.

NBA

The Pistons defeated the Hornets 118-112 last night. Jaden Ivey led Detroit with 24 points.

The Pistons host the Suns this evening. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
