Houghton Hockey Stays Unbeaten After Late Comeback – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
• Houghton exploded for four goals in the third period, and defeated Calumet 4-2. Second-period goals from Dan Loukus and Cam Anderson had given the Copper Kings a lead, but Landon Stevens put the Gremlins on the board, and Mike Maillette tied it. Camden Markham netted the game-winner with four minutes remaining, and Maillette’s empty netter sealed the win. Troy Povich and Bryant Lee split time in net for Houghton. Aksel Loukus stopped 56 shots for Calumet, but took the loss.

In boys basketball last night…
• Houghton pounded Ontonagon 81-49.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell edged Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 47-44. Gabe Popko scored 18 for the Lakes.

In girls’ play last evening…
• Hancock shut down Chassell 57-31. Cassie Pietila led the Bulldogs with 16 points, and Bella Hebert scored 15. Trisha Pietila scored 11 for the Panthers, and Kylie Sohlden had 10.

On the girls schedule tonight…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City welcomes West Iron County.
• Houghton will play at Gladstone in a game that was originally scheduled for tomorrow night, but has been moved up because of projected bad weather.

In a girls-boys doubleheader tonight…
• L’Anse plays at Baraga.

The Houghton girls swim team defeated Westwood 99-75 yesterday. Rose Dennis won the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Claire Filpus won the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. The Houghton boys team won its meet easily, as the Westwood team has only two male swimmers.

College Basketball

The Finlandia men’s basketball team plays at Kalamazoo College tonight.

NHL

The Wings host the Lightning tonight. Coverage will start at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons fell to the Jazz 126-111 last evening. Jaden Ivey scored 30 for Detroit. Jalen Duren added 15, and grabbed 14 rebounds.

The Pistons play at Philadelphia tonight.
