Houghton Hockey Staves Off Brother Rice – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
• Houghton held off Brother Rice 6-5. The Gremlins took a two-goal lead into the third period. The Warriors closed the gap to one, but Mike Maillette reestablished the cushion with his third goal of the night. After pulling their goalie, Brother Rice found the net with 70 seconds remaining, but couldn’t get the goal they needed to force overtime. Jace Deforge had two goals and an assist, and Camden Markham scored once. Bryant Lee made 18 saves, as the Gremlins remained unbeaten.
• Donnie Nicely netted the game-winner in overtime, as Calumet edged Detroit Jesuit 3-2. Liam Pomroy and Dylan Crouch also scored for the Copper Kings.
• Jeffers opened the Merrill Tournament with an 8-2 victory over the host team. The Jets will face either Rhinelander or Medford today – the score from their opening game was not reported.

In boys basketball last evening…
• Houghton outscored Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 67-49.
• Jeffers got past Ironwood 64-58. Levi Frahm led the Jets with 28 points. Matthew Schutz added 15, and Ashton Kunishige scored 12.

In girls action last night…
• Houghton stopped Westwood 59-53.
• Hancock suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 50-49 heartbreaker at Escanaba.
• L‘Anse shut down Bessemer 64-23.
• Jeffers got past Ironwood 40-34. Taylor Heinonen scored 11 for the Jets, and Mia Nordstrom added 10. Hanna Vaughn led the Red Devils with 23.

The Houghton swim team competes at the Marquette Splash-n-Dash Invitational today.

College Basketball

The Finlandia men’s team welcomes Grace Christian today at noon.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Northern Michigan this afternoon.

College Hockey

13th-ranked Michigan Tech blanked Saint Thomas 2-0 last evening. The game was scoreless until Parker Saretsky found the net midway through the third period. Tristan Ashbrook’s empty-netter sealed the win. Blake Pietila stopped 27 shots to earn his fifth shutout of the season, and extend his all-time Huskies career record to 15. Those teams skate again tonight at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Northern Michigan has the weekend off.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 6-0 at Adrian College last night. The Bulldogs outshot the Lions 60-7. Those teams face off again this afternoon.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team fell to Trine University 4-1 last night. Tessa Deal scored the Lions’ only goal. The Thunder outshot the Lions 48-17. Those teams skate again today at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines’ v the Vail Yeti last night – no report. Those teams play again tonight in Colorado.

The Portage Lake Pioneers entertain the Eagle River Falcons tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

NBA

The Pistons lost 116-110 to the Pelicans last night. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 22, and Saddiq Bey added 20.

The Pistons host the Knicks tomorrow at 1:00.

NHL

The Wings visit the Blue Jackets tonight. We’ll join the game after Calumet hockey on KBear 102.3.

The NFL Wild Card Playoff games begin today…
• The 49ers host the Seahawks at 4:30.
• The Chargers visit the Jaguars at 8:15.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers signed contracts with relievers José Cisnero and Rony García yesterday. They were the final two players on the roster who had filed for arbitration.

Former Tigers catcher Grayson Greiner has signed a minor-league deal with the Twins. He spent last season with Arizona’s Triple A team in Reno.

The Brewers announced deals with eight arbitration-eligible players yesterday, including Brandon Woodruff, Willy Adames, Luis Urias, Devin Williams and Rowdy Tellez. Corbin Burnes did not agree to a deal, so he and the team will head to an arbitration hearing.
