Houghton Hockey Holds Off Brother Rice – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last evening…
• Houghton remained unbeaten by edging Brother Rice 4-3. Jack Sayen gave the Gremlins an early lead. After the Warriors tied it, Jace DeForge responded, and the Gremlins were up 2-1 at the end of the first period. DeForge scored again in the second period. Brother Rice narrowed the gap early in the third period, but Mike Maillette restored the two-goal advantage just 39 seconds later. His goal became the game-winner when the Warriors added a final tally in the closing seconds. Bryant Lee made 21 saves.
• Calumet fell to Detroit Jesuit 5-4. Early goals by Luca Matous and Kobe Solomonson gave the Copper Kings a 2-1 lead after the first period. Brendan Boberg extended the lead 13 seconds into the second period, and quickly added another tally. Another Cubs goal made it 4-2 Calumet after two periods. The Cubs then dominated the third period, and scored the game-winner with just 47 seconds remaining in regulation. Hear the game replay here.
• The Jeffers trip to the Merrill Tournament was canceled because of the storm.

In hockey today…
• Houghton welcomes Detroit Jesuit. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
 • Calumet plays host to Brother Rice. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

In boys basketball last evening…
• Houghton defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 68-40.

All of last night’s girls contests were snowed out…
• The Escanaba at Hancock game was postponed to January 20th, with the JV at 3:30, and the varsity to follow.
• The Chassell at Ontonagon contest was postponed, with no make-up date announced.
• The L’Anse at Bessemer match was postponed, with no make-up date announced.

The Marquette swim tournament at which Houghton was scheduled to compete today has been postponed to next Saturday.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech teams host Lake Superior State today – the women at 1:00, and the men at 3:00.

Both Northern Michigan teams entertain Ferris State.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech concludes its series against Saint Thomas tonight in Minnesota.

Northern Michigan scored the first goal of the game, but then fell to Lake Superior State 5-1 last night. Those teams skate in Sault Ste. Marie again tonight in the final game of the Cappo Cup series. The Lakers hold a 12-11 lead in the total goals competition.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines’ game at Mosinee tonight has been postponed because of the storm. No make-up date has been announced.

The Portage Lake Pioneers have the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings entertain the Kings tonight. 

NBA

The Pistons couldn’t hold a late lead, and dropped a tight 112-110 decision to the Rockets last night. With Cade Cunningham and Bojan Bogdanovic both out of action, Kevin Knox II and Alec Burks each scored 19.

The Pistons visit the Wizards for a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day matinee on Monday.

NFL

The NFL playoffs begin today…
• The Browns visit the Texans in a 4:30 contest.
• The Chiefs welcome the Dolphins for an 8:00 game.

Tomorrow…
• The Bills host the Steelers in a 1:00 game – POSTPONED TO MONDAY AT 4:30 BECAUSE OF WEATHER.
• The Packers visit the Cowboys for a 4:30 contest.
• The Lions entertain Matthew Stafford and the Rams in an 8:00 game.

The Eagles wrap up Wild Card weekend at Tampa Bay Monday night.
