Houghton Hockey Falls in Regular Season Finale – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
• Houghton concluded its regular campaign with a 4-3 loss to Marquette. The Redmen opened up a 4-0 lead before goals from Camden Markham, Hudson Markham and Jace Deforge narrowed the margin. Bryant Lee made 21 saves. The Gremlins finish with a record of 23-2, and share the conference title with the Redmen.
• Calumet edged Kingsford 2-1. 

In hockey tonight…
• Jeffers faces University Liggett. That game will face off at 6:30 at the Calumet Colosseum.

The regular season ends tomorrow…
• Calumet hosts University Liggett. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Jeffers welcomes Escanaba at 1:00 at the SDC.

In boys basketball last evening…
• Calumet lost to Westwood 46-35. Blake Tarvis scored 12 for the Copper Kings.
• Jeffers smothered Chassell 92-34. Levi Frahm had 29 points, 10 assists and 8 steals for the Jets. Oliver Campbell and Kalvin Kytta each had 10 for the Panthers. Jeffers remains unbeaten.
• Ewen-Trout Creek downed Ontonagon 65-59.

In girls play last evening…
• Houghton outscored Marquette 68-42.
• Calumet got past West Iron County 42-38 in overtime.
• Hancock edged Lake Linden-Hubbell 50-48. Bella Hebert had 23 for the Bulldogs. Emily Jokela scored 24 for the Lakes. The Bulldogs improve to 17-1.
• Jeffers slipped past Chassell 39-35. Raena Kangas scored 16 for the Jets. Trisha Pietila led the Panthers with 11.
• Ontonagon stopped Ewen-Trout Creek 34-21.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Houghton travels to Bessemer.
• Calumet plays at Gwinn. There will be no JV game, and the varsity contest will tip off at 6:00.
• Hancock hosts Iron Mountain.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell welcomes Stephenson.
• Jeffers journeys to Escanaba.

In a girls-boys doubleheader…
• Baraga visits Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

In high school swimming…
• The U.P. diving championships will be held at Marquette today.
• The U.P. swimming championships will be held at Marquette tomorrow.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams earned wins over Purdue-Northwest last night.
• The women cruised to an 80-46 victory. Ellie Mackay led the Huskies with 16 points, and Katelyn Meister added 15.
• The men eked out a 71-70 victory. Pete Calcaterra’s free throw with three seconds remaining provided the winning margin. He finished with 22 points.

Both Tech teams host Parkside tomorrow – the women at 1:00, and the men at 3:00.

Both Northern teams defeated Parkside last evening – the women 73-67, and the men 73-47.

Both Wildcats teams entertain Purdue-Northwest tomorrow.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team has the weekend off, before closing the regular season at Minnesota State next weekend.

Northern Michigan University hockey hosts Ferris State tonight and tomorrow.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team concludes its season at Concordia-Wisconsin tonight and tomorrow.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines host the Portage Lake Pioneers tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NHL

The Red Wings won their fifth straight game last night, dousing the Flames 5-2. Dominik Kubalik scored twice for Detroit, and Tyler Bertuzzi had a goal and two assists. Magnus Hellberg made 33 saves.

The Wings skate at Seattle tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 10:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has signed a two-year contract extension with defenseman Olli Määttä.

NBA

Because of the all-star break, the Pistons are off until they visit the Magic Thursday night.

Pigs-N-Heat

The annual Pigs-N-Heat hockey game between local firefighters and police officers will be held tonight at 6:00 at the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena. Along with the game, there will be many fun activities and prize giveaways. Proceeds support the Pigs-N-Heat fund, that provides assistance to victims of fire and crime in the Copper Country.

  • Thursday – Hockey regional semifinals will be played at the SDC. Houghton faces Jeffers at 5:30, and Calumet takes on Hancock at 7:30. Coverage of both games will begin at 5:10 on KBear 102.3.
