Houghton Hockey Crushes Kingsford – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In hockey last evening…
• Houghton broke open a tight game with four third period goals, and defeated Kingsford 8-2 last evening. Mike Maillette logged a hat trick. Jace DeForge added two goals. Jay Halonen and Connor Arko scored, and Gage Gullstrand netted his first goal of the season. Cooper Flachs stopped eight shots to earn his first varsity win in net. The Gremlins outshot the Flivvers 43-10, and remain unbeaten.

In boys high school basketball last night…
• Hancock lost to Watersmeet 55-49.
• L’Anse fell to Republic-Michigamme 46-34. Easton Foucault scored 11 points for the Purple Hornets, and Kolyn Sweeney added nine. Republic was led by John Wheeler with 15, and Tripp Lafaro with 11.

Tonight…
• Houghton welcomes Ewen-Trout Creek.

The Houghton swim team v Westwood yesterday – no report.

The Keweenaw Volleyball Club has set tryouts for its U15 through U18 teams. Sessions will take place at the Hancock High School gym tonight between 6:30 and 8:30, and Sunday between 6:00 and 8:30. For details about the club, along with sign-up forms and information, click here.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team dropped a 71-62 decision at Concordia-Saint Paul last night. Isabella Lenz led the Huskies with 17 points.

MTU freshman Alyssa Wypych has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Offensive Player of the Week. Wypych tallied 39 points in Tech’s games against Minnesota-Duluth and Saint Cloud State last weekend.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Rangers tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Dylan Larkin will miss Detroit’s next two games because of an injury. Jonatan Berggren has been called up from Grand Rapids to fill in.

NHL veteran Patrick Kane is joining the Red Wings. The 35-year-old signed a one-year contract. He was a free agent, and is recovering from hip surgery. Kane won three Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks, and has a Conn Smythe Trophy and a Hart Trophy on his mantle, along with 451 career goals.

The Pistons entertain the Lakers this evening.
