Houghton Hockey Cruises, but Calumet Falls – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
• Camden Markham and Connor Raffaelli each had hat tricks, as Houghton blanked Rochester 8-0. Raffaelli added one assist, and Markham recorded two, in a game that ended after two periods, because of the mercy rule. Mike Maillette scored the Gremlins’ other two goals, and Gaborik Carlson had four assists. Troy Povich had to make just six saves to earn the shutout in net.
• Calumet fell 3-2 to Utica Eisenhower. Both teams scored twice in the first period. After a scoreless second, the Eagles netted the game-winner in the third.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Saint Thomas with a 4-3 overtime victory Saturday evening. Brian Halonen’s game-winner in the extra period was his second goal of the night. Tommy Parrottino and Logan Pietila also scored. Blake Pietila earned the win in net.

Lake Superior State University wrapped up a series sweep over Northern Michigan with a 4-1 win Saturday.

Both Finlandia hockey teams are off until after the holidays.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams lost to Ferris State Saturday afternoon.
• A late comeback by the women’s team fell short, in an 80-74 defeat. Alex Rondorf led the Huskies with a career-best 21 points.
• The men fell behind early in a 71-48 loss. Adam Hobson paced Tech with 16 points.

The Northern Michigan women’s team shut down Lake Superior State 50-78 Saturday. The Wildcat men fell to the Lakers 74-72.

The Finlandia basketball team split their games against Great Lakes Christian Saturday.
• The women smothered the Crusaders 82-32. Katie Lundeen led the Lions with 16 points, and Martina Jahfetson added 14.
• The men dropped a 114-80 decision. B.J. Williams scored 18 for the Lions.

Adult Hockey

In Great Lakes Hockey League action…
• The Portage Lake Pioneers outscored the Marquette Mutineers 11-8.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Brooklyn Nets tonight.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings are off until Tuesday, when they host the New York Islanders. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

• The Detroit Lions visit the Denver Broncos for a 4:05 game.
• The Green Bay Packers host the Chicago Bears in the evening contest.

MLB

Former Detroit Tigers super utility player Andrew Romine has announced his retirement. Romine is best remembered for playing all nine positions on September 30th, 2017. His 11-year major league career included four seasons in Detroit. He saw little action last year with the Chicago Cubs.
