Houghton Hockey Claims Narrow Win Over Hancock – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last evening…
• Hudson Markham’s first goal of the season with 26 seconds remaining in regulation gave Houghton a narrow 1-0 victory over Hancock.
• Brady Boberg’s goal put Calumet up early, but Marquette came back to defeat Calumet 4-1. Hunter Tuoriniemi made 28 saves for the Copper Kings. Hear the game replay here.
• Jeffers outscored Kingsford 5-2. Trayton Helminen had a hat trick, Brit Heinonen had three assists, Cody Turner had a goal and an assist, and Cage Osterman scored a goal. Kasen Helminen gets the win in net.

In high school girls basketball last night…
• Houghton stopped L’Anse 63-47. Danica Ryynanen paced the Gremlins with 24 points. Eva Gerard had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Clea Ollanketo added 14 points. Mylee Londo led the Purple Hornets with 25 points, and Brooklyn Dompier chipped in 12.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell shut down Chassell 69-18. Emily Jokela had 22 points for the Lakes, and Cleo Milkey added 15.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost to Stephenson 53-30.
• Baraga smothered Jeffers 44-21.
• Ontonagon fell to Bessemer 50-40.

In boys play last night…
• Houghton fell to Kingsford 64-38.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Ewen-Trout Creek 58-47. Gape Popko scored 27 for the Lakes, and Austin Gordon had 26 for the Panthers.
• Chassell overcame an 18-point third-quarter deficit to defeat Watersmeet in overtime 72-67. The Panthers were led by Eli Danison with 18 points, and Oliver Campbell with 15.

NHL

Dylan Larkin scored twice, as the Red Wings cruised past the Sabers 5-3 last night. Robby Fabbri, Moritz Seider and Michael Rasmussen also scored. Alex Lyon made 29 saves.

The Wings host the Sharks tomorrow. Because of NFL football, we’ll join the game in progress after Calumet High School basketball on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons entertain the Grizzlies tonight. Coverage will start at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The Lions will have to play at least the next four weeks without one of their best offensive lineman. Alim McNeill was placed on injured reserve yesterday, after suffering a knee sprain in Sunday’s win over the Saints.

MLB

The Tigers will have the 11th pick in the next Major League Baseball draft. That’s where Detroit was expected to finish in last night’s lottery drawing. The Guardians claimed the top selection. The Brewers will have the 17th pick.

Former Brewers catcher Victor Caratini has agreed to a $12 million, two-year contract with the Astros.
