Houghton Hockey Blanks Brighton, Remains Unbeaten – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
 • Houghton blanked Brighton 6-0. Camden Markham scored twice in the opening period to give the Gremlins an early lead. Houghton exploded for four tallies in the second frame to put the game away, with Markham getting two more, and Mike Maillette and Jay Halonen also finding the net. Gab Carlson and Landon Stevens each had three assists. Bryant Lee made 21 saves, as the Gremlins improved to 13-0, with six shutouts.
 • Calumet and Northville played to a 1-1 tie.
 • Hancock fell to Novi 5-3. Jackson Sintkowski, Calvin Heinonen and Ian Nordstrom scored for the Bulldogs. Saku Cunard and Dan Wroblewski split time in net for Hancock.
 • Jeffers lost at Manistique 4-0.

In high school boys basketball last night…
 • Ontonagon edged Hancock 50-47.
• Calumet stopped Baraga 64-35. Tyler Black led the Copper Kings with 17 points. Brayden Nelson and Levi Kilpela each added 13. Daniel Nieskes scored 18 for the Vikings.
• Watersmeet shut down L’Anse 70-21
• Lake Linden-Hubbell shaded Wakefield-Marenisco 52-49. Matt Len led the Lakes with 14 points.

In girls action…
 • Houghton downed Baraga 66-52 – the first loss of the season for the Vikings.
 • Calumet dispatched Gladstone 58-29.
 • Hancock raced past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 66-30. Cassie Pietila and Bella Hebert each scored 13 for the Bulldogs. Ashlea Datto scored 19 for the Blue Bolts.
 • Jeffers got past Bessemer 42-38. Sara Johnson scored 16 for the Jets.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell smothered Wakefield-Marenisco 51-20. Cleo Milkey led all scorers with 17 points.
• L’Anse outscored Watersmeet 60-50.

The Houghton swim team hosts its own Splash Invitational today.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech teams play at Wayne State this afternoon.

Both Northern Michigan teams play at Saginaw Valley State today.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team defeated Arizona State 4-2 in their opening game at the Desert Classic in Tempe yesterday. Evan Orr put the Huskies on the board 91 seconds into the game with his first collegiate goal. Tristan Ashbrook and Jack Works each scored once, and Ryland Mosley sealed the win with an empty-netter. The Huskies will face Boston University in the championship game today. The Terriers defeated Air Force 5-1 in their semifinal.

The Northern Michigan hockey team lost to Minnesota State 5-2 last night. Those teams play again tonight in Marquette.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team fell to Trine University 5-3 yesterday. Milos Todorovic, Matteo Ybarra and Owen Schmidt scored for the Lions. Dakota Meyer made 28 saves. Those teams meet again this afternoon at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team entertains Wisconsin-Superior this evening at 7:00 and tomorrow at 4:00. Coverage of tomorrow’s game will begin at 3:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers lost 5-2 to the Eagle River Falcons last night. 

The Calumet Wolverines visit the Falcons this evening.

Nordic Skiing

Michigan Tech skiers turned in two top-20 performances at the mass start 20k classic yesterday, as the U.S. Cross Country Ski National Championships concluded at the Tech Trails. Skylar Patten placed 11th in the men’s event, and Anabel Needham placed 20th in the women’s. Luke Jager from the University of Utah won the men’s event, and Hailey Swirbul of the APU Nordic Ski Center completed a sweep of all three of this week’s events with a win in the women’s race.

In the 10k junior race, Adrik Kraftson from Northern Michigan University took first place in the men’s event, with Michigan Tech’s Wes Campbell finishing eighth. Ava Thurston from Dartmouth College won the women’s race.

Even though the championships have wrapped up, there will be a SuperTour skate sprint today.

NBA

The Pistons lost to the Spurs 121-109 last night. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 21 for Detroit, and Jaden Ivey added 20.

The Pistons host the 76ers tomorrow afternoon.

NHL

The Red Wings fell to the Panthers 3-2 last evening. Jonatan Berggren and Robby Fabbri scored for Detroit.

The Wings skate at Toronto tonight. Because of NFL football, we’ll join the Wings game after Calumet hockey on KBear 102.3.

NFL

The regular NFL season wraps up this weekend.

Today, the Chiefs visit the Raiders for a 4:30 contest, and the Jaguars host the Titans for an 8:15 game. Hear them both on 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions visit the Packers for the Sunday night game. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Former Tigers pitcher Drew Hutchison has signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays. Detroit had designated Hutchison for assignment after the 2022 season, and he elected to become a free agent.
