Houghton Hockey Blanked in Semis – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

The Houghton high school hockey team’s season ended yesterday, with a 5-0 loss to Cranbrook Kingswood in the Division Three tournament semifinal. Cranes goaltender Garrett Dudlar stymied the Gremlins, stopping 35 shots. Meanwhile, Cranbrook was able to get 16 of 21 shots past Houghton netminder Bryant Lee. The Gremlins finish their season with a record of 21-3-2. Hear the replay of yesterday’s game here.

The Cranes will face East Grand Rapids for the Division title today. The Pioneers dispatched Bay Reps from the Traverse City area 3-0 yesterday. Byron Center and Trenton will face off for the Division Two crown, and Detroit Catholic Central will play Brighton for the Division One championship.

Girls basketball district champions were crowned last night.
• In Division Four, District 97, Ewen-Trout Creek advanced with a 52-42 win over Ironwood.
• In Division Four, District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell outscored Hancock 49-43.
• In Division Four, District 99, Ishpeming dispatched Baraga 63-31.
• In Division Three, West Iron County got past Westwood 59-53.
• In Division Two, Negaunee eliminated Sault Ste. Marie 38-21.

In regional semifinal games Monday…
• In Division Four, Lake Linden-Hubbell will take on Ewen-Trout Creek at 7:00 at Houghton High School. Ishpeming and Carney-Nadeau will play in the other regional semifinal at 6:00 at Kingsford High School.
• In Division Three, West Iron County will face Harbor Springs at 6:00 at Escanaba High School. Elk Rapids and Roscommon will meet in the other regional semifinal.
• In Division Two, Negaunee will play Petoskey at 7:00 at Manistique High School. Ludington and Clare will play in the other semifinal.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech opened the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs by overwhelming Bowling Green 5-0. Blake Pietila earned his fourth shutout of the season, and 24th of his career. Logan Pietila got the only goal the Huskies would need midway through the first period. Isaac Gordon, Henry Bartle, Ryland Mosely and Arvid Caderoth also found the net. Those teams play again tonight at 6:07 at the SDC. If needed, game three will be played tomorrow.

Northern Michigan dropped its playoff opener 2-1 at Minnesota State, despite outshooting the Mavericks 33-21. Rylan Van Unen netted the Wildcats’ only goal. Those teams skate again tonight in Mankato.

In other CCHA playoff openers, Bemidji State edged Ferris State 5-4 in overtime. Lake SUperior State stopped St. Thomas 4-1.

College Basketball

Both Northern Michigan teams will compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball tournament this weekend.
• The women’s event is being held at Grand Valley State. The host Lakers will face fifth-seed Parkside in today’s first semifinal. Third-seed Northern will take on second-seed Ferris State in the second game. The championship match will be played tomorrow.
• Northern is hosting the men’s tournament. The top-seed Wildcats will play fourth-seed Grand Valley today at 1:00. Third-seed Ferris State and seventh-seed Wayne State will tip off at 3:30. The title game will be played tomorrow at 2:00.

NMU’s Max Weisbrod has been named the GLIAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year. Kingsley Perkins of Lake Superior State was honored as Defensive Player of the Year. Dylan Kuehl of the Wildcats, Michigan Tech’s Marcus Tomashek and LSSU’s Tyson Edmondson were among those named to the All-Conference First Team. Tech’s Dan Gherezgher was placed on the Second Team. Kuehl and MTU’s Josh Terrian were added to the All-Defensive Squad. NMU’s Matt Majkrzak was named Coach of the Year, after leading the Wildcats to the regular-season title. Tech’s Isabella Lenz and Northern’s Makaylee Kuhn were placed on the GLIAC Women’s All-Conference First Team. Alex Rondorf of the Huskies, Jacy Weisbrod of the Wildcats and Grace Bradford from LSSU were placed on the Second Team. Bradford also earned All-Defensive Team honors, along with MTU’s Katelyn Meister and NMU’s Ana Rhude. See all the honorees here.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines netted five goals in the third period, and earned a 6-5 comeback win over the Fox Cities Ice Dogs last night. The Wolverines will welcome the Eagle River Falcons tonight at 6:00.

The Portage Lake Pioneers outscored the Falcons 6-2 last night, and host the Ice Dogs this evening at 7:30.

NHL

The Red Wings suffered their fourth straight loss last night, 4-0 to the Coyotes. Alex Lyon stopped 20 shots, and took the loss in net.

The Wings skate at Vegas tonight. Coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit made just one minor trade before the NHL deadline yesterday, sending defenseman Klim Kostin to the Sharks in exchange for defenseman Radim Simek and a seventh-round draft pick.

NBA

The Pistons host the Mavericks tonight.

MLB

The Tigers fell 4-3 to the Orioles last evening. Jake Rogers and Dillon Dingler homered. Casey Mize gave up two runs on four hits over three innings.

The Tigers will play the Pirates today. Matt Manning will start.

Half of the Brewers outscored half of the Athletics 7-4 yesterday. Rhys Hoskins hit a grand slam. The other half of the Brewers edged the other half of the Athletics 5-4.

The Brewers will face the Mariners today. Freddy Peralta will start.
