Houghton, Hancock Split Wing Ding Hoops Games – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school basketball last night, Houghton and Hancock split the annual Wing Ding games. 
• The Houghton boys held Hancock scoreless through the first period, and claimed a 43-27 victory.
• The Bulldog girls limited the Gremlins to just two points in the third quarter, and pulled away to a 36-29 win. Hancock’s Bella Hebert led all scorers with 14 points. Annika Peterson and Stella Wickstrom each scored 10 for Houghton.

In other girls games last evening…
• Ontonagon shut down Wakefield-Marenisco 42-25.
• L’Anse outscored Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 67-45.
• Ewen-Trout Creek lost to Ironwood 43-39 in overtime.

In boys action last night…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City downed L’Anse 54-46.
• Ewen-Trout Creek fell to Ironwood 64-41.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Calumet welcomes West Iron County.
• Jeffers hosts Republic-Michigamme.
• Baraga entertains North Dickinson.
• Ontonagon travels to Wakefield-Marenisco.

On the girls schedule…
• Calumet journeys to Escanaba.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City at Wakefield-Marenisco.

In a girls-boys doubleheader…
• Chassell plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell. The boys JV will tip off at 4:15. The girls varsity will start at 5:45. Spirit Week coronation will take place at 7, and the boys contest will start at 7:30.

In girls basketball tomorrow…
• Houghton plays at West Iron County in a make-up from January 19th.

In hockey last evening…
• Calumet lost to Marquette 4-0.
• Jeffers fell at Sault Ste. Marie 4-2.

In hockey tonight…
• Houghton skates at Hancock in the annual Wing Ding game. Coverage will begin at 7:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Jeffers opens play at the Cheboygan Invitational against Mount Pleasant.

The Houghton swim team split with Ishpeming yesterday – the boys earning a 122-49 victory, and the girls suffering a narrow 95-91 loss. Individual winners for the girls included Rose Dennis in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Claire Filpus in the 200 individual medley, Cora Mueller in the 500 freestyle and Maddie Raasio in the 100 freestyle. Boys winners included Beau Haataja in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Johannes Myhre in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, Ty Crisman in diving, Collin Raasio in the 100 freestyle, Brett Gaff in the 500 freestyle and Ian Evans in the 100 breaststroke.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams lost at Grand Valley State last night…
• The 24th-ranked women’s team fell to the sixth-ranked Lakers 60-43. Isabella Lenz led the Huskies with 13 points.
• The men’s squad couldn’t hold a halftime lead, and lost 79-74. Dan Gherezgher scored 20 points for the Huskies.

Both Tech teams will play at Davenport University tomorrow afternoon.

Both Northern teams earned victories Davenport last evening – the women 73-55, and the men 81-64.

Both Wildcats teams play at Grand Valley tomorrow.

The Finlandia men’s team plays at Andrews University this afternoon, then faces Kent State-Tuscarawas tomorrow, in a game that will also be played at Andrews in Berrien Springs.

The Finlandia women’s team plays at Mount Mary tonight.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team hosts Bowling Green for the Winter Carnival series. Faceoffs are at 7:07 tonight, and 5:07 tomorrow.

Northern Michigan hockey skates at St. Thomas tonight and tomorrow night.

The Finlandia University men’s team wraps up its season with home games against Concordia-Wisconsin today at 5:00 and tomorrow at 4:00. Coverage of today’s contest begins at 4:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team hosts Marian University Sunday night and Monday afternoon.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines both have the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings held off the Flames 2-1 last night. Dylan Larkin scored late in the second period, and Filip Zadina netted the game-winner early in the third, in his first appearance since he broke his leg in early November. Ville Husso made 35 saves.

The Wings host the Canucks tomorrow afternoon. Coverage will begin at 11:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons entertain the Spurs tonight. We’ll join the game after Finlandia men’s hockey on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Major League Baseball says it’s prepared to step in to keep the Detroit Tigers and 13 other teams on television if the regional networks owned by Sinclair Broadcasting collapse. Sinclair’s Diamond Sports Group, which includes Bally Sports Detroit, is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy because of falling cable television subscriptions. MLB could lose more than $1 billion in television revenue this season if Sinclair defaults.
