Houghton, Hancock Play in Softball Regionals Today – Saturday Sports wrap

High School

The Houghton softball team will play in the Division III regional tournament in Gladstone today. The Gremlins will face Grayling in the first semifinal at 10:00. Boyne City and Gladstone will play in the other semifinal at noon. The winners will play in the championship game at 2:00. We’ll broadcast Houghton’s semifinal game, and the championship game if the Gremlins advance, on 97.7 The Wolf.

Hancock will compete in the Division IV regional today at Norway. Gogebic takes on Bark River-Harris in the first semifinal at 10:00. The Bulldogs face Ishpeming in the second semifinal at 1:00. The title game is scheduled for 4:00.

MLB

The Brewers blasted the Tigers 10-0 last evening. Tobias Myers gave up a lead-off single in the first inning, but allowed no more hits through eight innings. Milwaukee teed off on Reese Olson early, scoring five in the second inning, and adding three more in the fourth. There were no home runs among the Crew’s 16 hits, but Blake Perkins tripled, and Rhys Hoskins, Brice Turang and William Contreras doubled. Turang had four hits; Perkins and Christian Yelich had three.

The Tigers will host the Brewers again today. Casey Mize will start against Freddy Peralta. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Before the game, Milwaukee brought pitcher James Meeker up from Nashville. Aaron Ashby was sent down.

Buddy Kennedy is no longer a Tiger. Kennedy was designated for assignment Monday. His contract has been purchased by the Phillies.

NBA

The NBA championship series continues tomorrow night, as the Celtics host the Mavericks. Boston leads the series 1-0.

NHL

The Panthers entertain the Oilers as the Stanley Cup series begins tonight.

Fishing

The annual Rice Lake Fishing Derby takes place tomorrow. Registration will take place at the Lake Linden-Hubbell Sportsmen’s Association clubhouse this evening from 6:00 until 8:00, and tomorrow from 7:00 until 1:00. Fishing will be open tomorrow from 7:00 until 4:00. This is a family-oriented event, with entry fees of just $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for juniors and $1.00 for children. For more details, click here.

No fishing licenses are necessary, because of Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend. All other fishing rules, including size and catch limits, still apply.
