Houghton, Hancock, L’Anse, Baraga Advance in Volleyball Districts – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

The high school volleyball tournament opened last night.
• In Division Two, Houghton outfought Escanaba 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23). The Gremlins will host Kingsford in one district semifinal tomorrow at 6:00. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Sault Ste. Marie will play at Negaunee in the other district semifinal tomorrow.
• In Division Three, Hancock dispatched Westwood 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-10). The Bulldogs will entertain West Iron County in a district semifinal tomorrow at 6:00. Calumet will play at Jeffers in the other district semifinal, with coverage on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• In Division Four, District 98, L’Anse swept Ontonagon 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-22). Mylee Londo led The Purple Hornets with 10 kills and five aces, and Madi Peterson had 21 assists. Baraga dispatched Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-1 (25-8, 23-25, 25-13, 25-16). In the district semifinals tomorrow night, L’Anse will play at Lake Linden-Hubbell, and Baraga will host Chassell. Both games will begin at 6:00.
• In Division Four, District 97 at Wakefield-Marenisco High School, Forest Park defeated Ironwood 3-1 (25-13, 25-27, 25-20, 25-11). Ewen-Trout Creek ousted Watersmeet 3-0. In the district semifinals tomorrow, Forest Park faces Bessemer at 5:00 Central Time, and Ewen-Trout Creek plays Wakefield-Marenisco at 6:30 Central Time.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball squad plays at Northern Michigan tonight at 6:30.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has been picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season. Defending champion Grand Valley earned the top spot in the preseason coaches’ poll, with Ferris State second. Northern Michigan was picked to finish fourth, and Lake Superior State 10th. MTU guard Bella Lenz and NMU guard Makaylee Kuhn were selected to the preseason ALL-GLIAC First Team.

College Soccer

Michigan Tech soccer goalkeeper Gracie VanLangevelde has been named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week. VanLangevelde earned two shutouts in net last weekend.

NHL

The Red Wings pulled out a 4-3 overtime victory over the Islanders last night. Lucas Raymond netted the game-winner. Daniel Sprong, Jake Walman and J.T. Compher scored as Detroit overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period. Ville Husso stopped 37 shots.

The Wings host the Panthers Thursday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons fell behind early, and lost to the Thunder 124-112 last evening. Jaden Ivey led Detroit with 20 points. Ausar Thompson had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Pistons entertain the Trail Blazers tomorrow night, with coverage beginning at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

In the World Series last night, the Rangers defeated the Diamondbacks 3-1. Texas leads the fall classic 2-1, with game four tonight in Arizona.

NFL

Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 152 yards, as the Lions outscored the Raiders 26-14 last night. Gibbs scored his first Ford Field touchdown. Jared Goff passed for 272 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Riley Patterson kicked four field goals. The Detroit defense sacked Vegas quarterback Jimmy Garoppalo six times.
