Houghton, Hancock Earn Hockey Wins – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
• Houghton netted four goals in the second period, and surged past Novi 7-2. Noah Maillette scored for the Gremlins in the first period, which ended in a 1-1 tie. The Wildcats grabbed a brief lead early in the second, but Houghton regained control with two goals from Mike Maillette, plus a goal from Tanner Flachs and a penalty shot by Cooper Leonard. Mike Maillette completed a hat trick in the third period, and Noah Maillette claimed his second of the night. Andrew Lampinen made 13 saves. The Gremlins are now the only high school team in the state with a perfect record, after Byron Center skated to a 3-3 tie with Bay Reps Saturday.
• Calumet fell to Brighton 4-1. The Copper Kings grabbed an early lead on a first-period goal by Brendan Boberg. Brighton responded with two goals in the second, and two more in the third, including an empty-netter. Listen to the game replay here. Before the contest, longtime hockey player, coach and community supporter Joel Tuoriniemi was honored with the Paul Lehto Service Award. Tuoriniemi was killed in a car crash in September. • Hancock edged the DeWitt Capital City Capitals 3-2.
• Jeffers fell to Korah Collegiate 7-4.

In girls basketball Saturday afternoon…
• Calumet fell 52-22 at Gladstone.

The Copper Country Christian School split its games against the Delta County Knights Saturday.
• The Warriors won the girls contest 46-23. Alexia Peterson led all scorers with 15. Miina Leinonen added 12.
• The Knights took the boys contest 36-30. Luke Groeschl paced the Warriors with 14.

In high school swimming…
• Results from the Houghton Splash tournament Saturday have not been reported.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams earned wins at Davenport University Saturday.
• Katelyn Meister recorded a season-best 18 points, as the women claimed a 59-51 victory.
• The men’s team used a strong second half to wrap up a 59-53 win. Marcus Tomashek scored 21 for the Huskies, and Dan Gherezgher added 20.

The Northern hoops teams split their games at Grand Valley State.
• The women’s squad opened up an early lead, but fell to the top-ranked Lakers 64-47. Makaylee Kuhn and Sarah Newcomer each scored 11 for the Wildcats.
• The men’s team finished strong, and pulled out a 63-61 victory. Dylan Kuehl scored 16.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team fell to Northern Michigan 7-2 in Saturday’s exhibition contest. Isaac Gordon and Lauri Raiman scored for the Huskies, as coach Joe Shawhan distributed ice time to many of his reserves. Max Vayrynen and Michael Morelli split time in net.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Ducks tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will begin at 7:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Nuggets tonight.

In NFL play Saturday…
• The Steelers upended the Ravens 17-10.
• The Texans got past the Colts 23-19.

Today…
• The Lions host the Vikings in a 1:00 game, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
• The Packers entertain the Bears in a 4:25 contest. Green Bay would clinch a wild card playoff berth with a victory.
• The Bills visit the Dolphins in the Sunday night contest, broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
