Houghton, Hancock Claim Trenton Showcase Wins – Sunday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey, Calumet, Houghton and Hancock wrapped up play at the Trenton Showcase yesterday morning…
– Hancock edged Livonia Churchill 3-2 in a shootout. Petr Anderson scored both Bulldogs goals in the third period. Trevor Tchida had the only score in the shootout. Phillip Rios made 19 saves.
– Calumet fell to Hartland 5-3. Cam Kauppinen gave the Copper Kings an early lead, but the Eagles responded with four straight second period goals. Tanner Rowe and Brent Loukus added scores for Calumet, but the Kings couldn’t complete a comeback. Alex Studebaker made 17 saves, and took the loss.
– Houghton completed a sweep of its two games by defeating Warren De La Salle  5-1. The Gremlins spotted De La Salle an early score, than got goals from Jeff Heinonen, Brad Gauthier, Nathan Erva, Brendan Erickson and Niko Rajala to put the game away. Jimmy Pietila made 22 saves.

Jeffers defeated Cheboygan 6-3 yesterday.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost 4-2 at the College of Saint Scholastica last night. Connor Hannon and Timo Kocar scored for the Lions. Marcus Gloss made 23 saves. The Lions now lead the Saints by three standings points in the race for the final Northern Collegiate Hockey League playoff berth, with two games remaining in the regular season.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team suffered a 4-0 loss at Saint Scholastica yesterday afternoon. Sarah Gundry made 57 saves, as the Lions were outshot 61-12.

Both Lions basketball teams are off this weekend.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team earned its fourth straight win, with a 60-47 victory at Wisconsin-Parkside yesterday afternoon. Elizabeth Kelliher, Ellie Mackay and Cassidy Trotter each scored 17 for the Huskies. Abbie Botz grabbed 13 rebounds.

The Tech men’s team fell behind early, and lost to Parkside 82-74. TeeAaron Powell scored a career-best 27 points for the Huskies.

Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams earned victories at Purdue Northwest yesterday – the women 44-40, and the men 86-74.

The NMU hockey team scored three times in the first period, then held on to defeat 13th-ranked Bowling Green State University 3-2 last night

The Michigan Tech hockey team had the weekend off.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines got past the Eagle River Falcons 4-3 in overtime last night. Brendan Jacques netted the game-winner.

The Portage Lake Pioneers overcame a 4-1 deficit to edge the Fond du Lac Bears 5-4 last evening.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons blew a 25-point lead, and dropped a 111-101 decision to the Los Angeles Clippers yesterday afternoon. Reggie Jackson led Detroit with 29 points. The Pistons entertain the Denver Nuggets Tuesday evening. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
Jonathan Bernier made 35 saves, as the Detroit Red Wings blanked the Ottawa Senators 2-0 last night. Both Detroit goals came in the first period, from Danny DeKeyser and Darren Helm. The Wings are off until Thursday, when they host the Vegas Golden Knights. Pregame coverage will start at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

The injury Dylan Larkin suffered in Friday’s game has been diagnosed as a strained oblique muscle. He’ll miss one to two weeks.

NFL
The New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams will meet in the Super Bowl today at 6:30. Pregame coverage begins at 2:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
