Houghton, Hancock Advance at MacInnes Classic – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton will face Hancock for the championship of the MacInnes Holiday Hockey Classic tonight.

In game one last evening, the Gremlins routed Calumet 8-0, in a game that ended 6:45 second into the third period because of the mercy rule. Landon Stevens had two goals and two assists for Houghton. Gab Carlson, Camden Markham, Mike Maillete, Jay Halonen, Jace Deforge and Cooper Leonard each scored once. Leonard’s was his first at the varsity level. Sully Rajala had three assists. Bryant Lee earned the shutout in net, as the Gremlins outshot the Copper Kings 52-18.

In game two, Hancock scored twice in the third period, and edged Fond du Lac 2-1. David Olson and Bryce Hanner scored for the Bulldogs. Saku Cunard made 15 saves, as Hancock outshot Fondy 26-16.

The Copper Kings and Cardinals will play in the consolation match this evening at 5:30. The Gremlins and Bulldogs will face off for the title at 7:30. Coverage of both games will begin at 5:10 on KBear 102.3.

In girls basketball last night…
• Baraga outscored L’Anse 69-44.

College Hockey

Sixteenth-ranked Michigan Tech fell 8-1 to 18th-ranked Western Michigan in the opening round of the 57th Great Lakes Invitational Hockey Tournament yesterday. Kash Rasmussen scored the Huskies’ only goal. Blake Pietila gave way in net to Max Vayrynen midway through the contest.

Ferris State defeated Michigan State 4-2 in the other semifinal game.

The Huskies and Spartans will meet in the consolation match today at 3:30. The Broncos and Bulldogs will tangle in the championship game tonight at 7:00 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

NHL

The Red Wings skate at Pittsburgh tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Forward Jakub Vrana is getting closer to returning to the Wings. After a couple of months in the players assistance program, he’s practiced with the team for the past couple of weeks. He’ll begin a three-game conditioning stint with Grand Rapids tonight.

NBA

The Pistons entertain the Magic this evening.
