High School

In high school volleyball last night…

• Houghton dropped a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-21) contest to Marquette. For the Gremlins, Chloe Serafin recorded seven kills, five blocks and 13 digs. Sophie Hebert had eight kills and three blocks.
• Calumet stopped Ishpeming 3-0 (25-16, 25-7, 25-13). Allie Bjorn had 11 kills, three aces and 10 digs for the Copper Kings. Maddie Torola had three kills, seven aces and two blocks. Jackie Kiilunen had 13 kills and two aces. Chloe Coppo had four kills.
• Hancock swept West Iron County 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-17).
• Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-17). For the Lakes, Cleo Milkey had nine kills and seven aces. Ashlyn Steves had 11 digs, and Isabella Tampas had 10 assists. Kaylynn Smith led the Blue Bolts’ defense with 11 digs. Kiera Isaacson had eight kills and Macy Jurgenson had 13 assists.
• Jeffers got past Baraga 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-21). Taylor Heinonen 14 assists for the Jets, Mia Nordstrom had 11 kills, Elizabeth Halonen added nine assists and four kills, and Montanna Heinonen, Brooke Pietila and Sammi Pennala each had four kills. 
• Ewen-Trout Creek downed Chassell 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-13). Dusty Lippold had seven kills, one ace and six digs for Chassell. Sylvia Aho had one kill, four aces, six assists and eight digs. Elli Kuntze had one kill, three aces and 10 digs.
• L’Anse lost 3-0 at Ironwood.
• Ontonagon fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 3-0.

At the El Harger cross country invitational at Munising yesterday…

• Houghton finished second to Marquette in the boys team competition. Hancock was 15th. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta took individual honors, finishing more than a minute ahead of Marquette’s Beepsee Teeple. Houghton’s Birk Seagren placed fourth, and Benjamin Hemmer eighth.
• The Gremlins dominated the girls competition, placing all five of their runners in the top-15. Tessa Rautiola medaled, with an 18-second margin over Escanaba’s Alisha Mabie. Roman Trevino Peterson, Sela Niska and Lily Ross from Houghton placed fourth, fifth and seventh. Marquette finished second, and Hancock fourth. Ella Keranen of the Bulldogs ranked ninth individually.

MLB

The Tigers took another step toward the playoffs with a tense 2-1 victory over the Rays yesterday. Wenceel Pérez’s two-run ground rule double in the fifth provided all the scoring Detroit needed. Tarik Skubal earned his 18th win of the season, allowing just two hits over seven innings. Beau Brieske surrendered a solo home run in the ninth, but then struck out pinch-hitter Josh Lowe to earn the save.

The Tigers host the Rays again tonight. Keider Montero will pitch against Zack Littell. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Twins lost to the Marlins. The Royals defeated the Nationals. Detroit and Kansas City are tied for the second and third American League wild card playoff berths, with Minnesota two games out. Each team has five regular-season games remaining.

The Brewers thumped the Pirates 7-2 last evening. Jackson Chourio and Willy Adames each had two hits.

The Brewers continue that series in Pittsburgh this evening. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Luis L. Ortiz.

Former Milwaukee first baseman Rowdy Tellez has been designated for assignment by the Pirates. He was four at-bats shy of reaching a $200,000 contract bonus.

NHL

The Red Wings open their preseason schedule tonight at Chicago. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines have lost what had become a popular regional opponent. The Marquette Mutineers will not operate this season. League officials say they will adjust to an 18-game conference schedule, with each team facing the other twice. 

NFL

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Favre disclosed his condition yesterday at congressional hearing, while testifying about his potential misuse of taxpayer money. Favre has been accused of improperly using political connections to redirect public money to his alma mater and his own pocket. He told lawmakers that he lost an investment in a company that he believed was developing a breakthrough concussion drug. The doctor running the company recently pleaded guilty to taking public money for his own use. Multiple concussions such as the ones Favre and others have suffered while playing football have been linked to a higher risk of Parkinson’s.
