In the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball tournaments last night…
– The second-seeded Michigan Tech women’s team was eliminated with a 67-57 loss to Ferris State. Elizabeth Kelliher led the Huskies with 17 points and 12 rebounds. The early loss threatens Tech’s chance of an at-large NCAA tournament bid. The Huskies are ranked 20th in the nation, and fourth in the Midwest Region, but have lost two of their last three games.
– Kyle Monroe scored 45 points, as the sixth-seeded Huskies men’s team upended Wayne State 88-74. Tech will play second-seeded Lake Superior State Saturday at 5:00 in the semifinals in Big Rapids.
– Both Northern Michigan teams fell in the quarterfinals last night. The women lost 58-40 to Grand Valley State, and the men dropped an 83-72 decision to Ashland.

The winner of the upcoming Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament will not receive the Broadmoor Trophy. Yesterday, WCHA officials replaced it with a new prize. The Jeff Sauer WCHA Championship Trophy is named after the former Colorado College and University of Wisconsin coach, who also spent many years as a WCHA administrator. Sauer died early last year. The Broadmoor Trophy will be retired. It was first awarded to the WCHA regular-season champion in 1981, after Michigan Tech left to join the CCHA, and took the MacNaughton Cup with them. When the Huskies and the MacNaughton Cup returned to the WCHA, the Broadmoor Trophy became the prize for the post-season tournament champion. It was named after the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs. It was redesigned in 2010 to look like the resort.
