High School
On the opening night of the girls high school basketball district playoffs…
• In Division Two semifinals, Houghton got off to a quick start, and buried Kingsford 59-33. The Gremlins outscored the Flivvers 16-4 in the first quarter. Danica Ryynanen led a balanced attack with 13 points. Nine Houghton players scored. Escanaba shut down Cheboygan 51-7 in the other semifinal. The Gremlins and Eskymoes will meet for the District title tomorrow at 6:00 in Escanaba. Coverage will begin around 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• In Division Three quarterfinals, Ishpeming dispatched Gwinn 47-32. The Hematites will host Hancock tomorrow at 6:00 in one semifinal. Negaunee got past Westwood 45-37. The Miners will entertain Calumet tomorrow at 6:00 in the other semifinal, with the broadcast beginning at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• In Division Four, District 98 quarterfinals, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City eliminated Chassell 56-29. The Blue Bolts will host Baraga tomorrow at 6:00 in one semifinal. Jeffers ousted L’Anse 51-35. Taylor Heinonen scored 15 for the Jets, and Brooklyn Dompier netted 18 for the Purple Hornets. The Jets will entertain Lake Linden-Hubbell tomorrow at 6:00 in the other semifinal.
• In Division Four, District 97 quarterfinals at Bessemer, Ironwood stopped Bessemer 57-21. The Red Devils will play Ontonagon tomorrow. Wakefield-Marenisco edged Watersmeet 48-46 in double overtime. The Cardinals will play Ewen-Trout Creek tomorrow. Both semifinals will take place at Bessemer.
In regular-season boys action last night…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell outscored Calumet 55-45. Gabe Popko led the Lakes with 19 points, and Matt Kerr added 17. Brayden Nelson scored 20 for the Copper Kings.
• Jeffers edged Houghton 69-68. Lincoln Just sank five three-pointers, and led the Jets with 17 points. Matthew Schutz added 16, and Brett Stevens had 15. Luke Hill paced the Gremlins with 21 points, and Bryce Pugh added 17. The Jets improve to 20-1.
• The L’Anse game at Forest Park was canceled.
On the boys schedule tonight…
• Hancock journeys to Watersmeet.
• Chassell tips off at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
• Ontonagon plays at Baraga.

At the Division Two state ski meet yesterday, Houghton’s Eli Heathman finished second in the giant slalom, and third in the slalom. Jack Haeussler was 43rd in the giant slalom, and 27th in the slalom. Rachel Sun finished 56th in the giant slalom, and 36th in the slalom.
Houghton and Hancock will meet for the regional hockey title tonight at the SDC. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
NHL
The Red Wings lost 6-2 to the Senators last night. Tyler Bertuzzi and David Perron scored for Detroit. Magnus Hellberg made 36 saves.

NBA
The Pistons fell to the Hornets 117-106 last evening. James Wiseman and Hamidou Diallo each scored 23 for Detroit.

MLB
The Tigers dropped an 8-5 decision to the Yankees last night. Eric Haase and Kerry Carpenter homered. Starter Beau Brieske gave up two runs over two innings.

The Brewers outscored the Royals 10-4 yesterday.
