Tigers Reclaim First Place
David Price allowed one run over 7-2/3rds innings, as the Tigers defeated the Indians 7-2 Friday night. J.D. Martinez homered and drove in four runs for Detroit.
The Tigers host the Indians again this evening. Kyle Lobstein will start against Danny Salazar. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
The Royals lost last night, so Detroit now leads Kansas City by a half-game in the American League Central Division.
Brewers Win Third Straight
Lyle Overbay’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Brewers to a 3-2 victory over the Reds Friday night. Cincinnati intentionally walked Gerardo Parra to pitch to Overbay, who responded with the game-winning shot to left-center.
The Brewers host the Reds again this evening. Yovani Gallardo will start against David Holmberg.
Saint Louis and Pittsburgh both won, so Milwaukee continued to trail the Cardinals by four games in the National League Central Division. They’re a game-and-a-half behind the Pirates, who hold the second wild card playoff position.
Lions, Packers Prep for Week Two
In the NFL on Sunday, the Lions play at Carolina. The Packers host the Jets.
MTU
The Michigan Tech soccer team used a strong second half to defeat Minnesota-Crookston 2-1 Friday night. Janelle Riedl scored the game-winning goal by redirecting a corner kick from Lexi Herrewig with 15 minutes remaining. Sarah Boyd scored her first goal as a Husky to tie the game earlier in the second half.
The Michigan Tech women’s tennis team earned its first win of the season Friday, defeating Ashland 7-2. The Huskies host Walsh this morning at 10:00.
The MTU volleyball team opened its GLIAC campaign with a 3-0 sweep at Lake Superior State Friday night, Sylvie Rokosh led the Huskies with 13 kills on 29 attempts. Tech plays at Northwood today.
The Michigan Tech football team tries for its second win of the season this afternoon at Malone.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team plays a non-conference game at Quincy this evening.
Finlandia
The Finlandia volleyball team opened play at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Classic Friday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Ripon College. The result of the Lions’ game against Martin Luther College last evening was not posted. Finlandia will play Saint Scholastica and Lawrence University today.
Both Finlandia soccer teams play at Robert Morris-Lake County today. The men’s team plays at Saint Norbert tomorrow.
High School Football
In high school football Friday night…
– Houghton earned its first win of the season, with a 38-6 triumph over Ironwood. Gremlins quarterback Ben Collaer ran for four touchdowns, and passed for another.
– Hancock took an early lead on a 40-yard Jack Fenton touchdown run, but Northland Pines scored the next 62 points, and defeated the Bulldogs 62-12.
– Calumet fell at Ishpeming 46-20. The Copper Kings took an early lead on a one-yard Kaden Kangas touchdown run… the first of his two scores. Ishpeming took advantage of two Calumet turnovers to take a 24-12 halftime lead.
– Baraga was shut out at Gogebic 56-0.
