Houghton Cruises to MacInnes Classic Crown – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton won the title at the MacInnes Holiday Hockey Classic last night, outscoring Hancock 7-3 in the championship match. The Gremlins and Bulldogs went toe-to-toe in the first period, with each team finding the net three times. Houghton then scored twice in each of the succeeding periods, while keeping Hancock out of the net for the duration. Camden Markham scored four goals and added two assists for the Gremlins. Landon Stevens had two goals and one assist, and Mike Maillete scored once. Sam Roberts, Bennett Sturos and Bryce Hanner scored for the Bulldogs. Bryant Lee earned the win in net, as Houghton outshot Hancock 38-18.

In the consolation match, Calumet edged Fond du Lac 2-1. Brayden Cima and Brendan Boberg each had a goal and an assist for the Copper Kings. Bruce Parisot made 38 saves to get the win in goal.

College Hockey

Arvid Caderoth’s goal in overtime lifted 16th-ranked Michigan Tech to a 3-2 victory over 11th-ranked Michigan State in the consolation match at the 57th Great Lakes Invitational Hockey Tournament yesterday. Tech played from behind the whole game, but Brett Thorne’s power play goal with 1:13 remaining in regulation forced the extra period. David Jankowski tipped in a shot from Jake Crespi in the second period for the Huskies’ other goal. Blake Pietila made 31 saves.

In the championship match, Western Michigan dispatched Ferris State 8-2 to take this year’s title.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s team visits second-ranked Ashland tonight.

NHL

The Red Wings surrendered four goals in the first period, then rallied with five straight to shade the Penguins 5-4 in overtime last night. Jake Walman scored the game-winner. David Perron’s tally with three minutes left in regulation forced overtime. Dylan Larkin, Jonatan Berggren, and Joe Veleno also scored.

The Wings skate at Buffalo this evening. Because of NFL football, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons snapped their six-game losing streak with a 121-101 victory over the Magic last evening. Alec Burks led Detroit with 32 points. Saddiq Bey added 28. Jalen Duren grabbed 18 rebounds.

The Pistons visit the Bulls tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

In tonight’s NFL contest, the Cowboys visit the Titans. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

Calumet Wolverines

Calumet Wolverines alumni will suit up for a couple of games at the Colosseum tonight. The veteran alumni contest starts at 6:45, and will be followed by a game between younger alums and the current team. The public is welcome. There is no charge, but donations to support the team will be appreciated.
