High School

In high school volleyball last night…

  • Hancock swept Iron Mountain 3-0.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell blanked Ontonagon 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-16). Cleo Milkey had eight kills for the Lakes. Pelli Fortin had three kills and three blocks. Payton Goldsworthy had nine assists.
  • Jeffers shut down L’Anse 3-0.

In volleyball today…

  • Baraga plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

In volleyball tomorrow…

  • Calumet competes at the D3-D4 Showdown in Livonia. The Kings will open with pool play games against Mendon, Manchester and Allen Park-InterCity.
  • Hancock competes at the Marquette Sentinel Invitational.

In boys soccer…

  • Houghton played to a 2-2 tie at Three Lakes, Wisconsin, yesterday. The Gremlins have added another game to their schedule at Kingsford tonight, and then host Escanaba Saturday.

Houghton swept the Tracy Strom cross country meet in Ishpeming yesterday…

  • The boys nosed out Jeffers in the team competition. Calumet finished fifth. Birk Seagren of the Gremlins medaled, as Houghton claimed five of the top 12 positions. Landon Larson of the Jets placed second individually, as the Jets put five runners in the top 13 places. Calumet’s Andrew Juntilla finished fifth. 
  • The Houghton girls easily outran Negaunee. Hancock was third, and Calumet fourth. Gremlins claimed the top four individual positions, led by medalist Tessa Rautiola. Hancock’s Ella Keranen placed fifth, and Calumet’s Maija Keranen was ninth.

At the Baraga cross country invitational…

  • Ironwood slipped past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City in the boys team competition. Joshua Gaunt led the Blue Bolts with a fifth-place finish. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta took first individually.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek took the girls team title, with Baraga second and Chassell third. Sylvia Aho from Chassell placed fourth individually, and Baraga’s Sophie Desrochers was fifth.

  • Houghton travels to Menominee. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  • Calumet entertains Kingsford in the annual Hall of Fame game. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. The Hall of Fame installation ceremony will begin tomorrow at 11 at the CLK School Commons.
  • Hancock journeys to Negaunee.
  • L’Anse plays at Iron Mountain.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell visits Forest Park. Hear streamed coverage from our sister station WIKB here
  • Ontonagon hosts Gogebic at the Ewen field.

College Football

Both Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan have this week off.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team hosts Ferris State tonight at 6, and Davenport tomorrow at 3.

The NMU volleyball team entertains Davenport tonight, and Ferris tomorrow.

College Soccer

The MTU women’s soccer team plays at Purdue Northwest this afternoon.

The Northern women’s soccer team visits Roosevelt University today.

The NMU men’s squad entertains Purdue Northwest.

MLB

Justyn-Henry Malloy’s sacrifice fly in the eighth drove home Matt Vierling with the winning run, as the Tigers claimed a 4-3 win over the Rays yesterday. Down 3-0 in the sixth, Colt Keith ignited the comeback with an RBI triple. He also singled home the tying run in the eighth. 

The Tigers host the White Sox tonight. Detroit has not designated a starter. Garrett Crochet will pitch for Chicago. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Royals won, and remain tied with the Tigers for the second and third American league wild card playoff berths. Minnesota lost, so any win by the Tigers or loss by the Twins over the next three days puts Detroit into the playoffs.

The Brewers pounced on the Pirates 5-2 yesterday. Aaron Civale tossed six shutout innings. Joey Ortiz had three hits.

The Brewers visit the Mets tonight. Frankie Montas will pitch against Sean Manaea.

Milwaukee will be the third seed in the upcoming playoffs, which means they won’t earn a first-round bye.

Reliever Nick Mears has been brought back from the injured list, after missing a month with a right forearm injury. Kevin Herget has been sent down to Nashville.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Blackhawks in a preseason game tonight. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

There’s a report that the Pistons have signed forward Lamar Stevens. He split time last season between the Grizzlies and Celtics.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Cowboys got past the Giants 20-15. 

The Packers host the Vikings in a 1:00 game Sunday.

The Lions entertain the Seahawks Monday night on 99.3 The Lift.
