Houghton Cross Country Sweeps Home Meet – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

The Houghton cross country teams earned two more victories yesterday, as they swept their own invitational at the Tech Trails.
• The girls easily outdistanced second-place Hancock, placing five runners in the top-10. Ishpeming’s Lola Korpi was the individual winner, with Gremlins Roman Peterlin and Tessa Rautiola placing second and third. Ella Keranen and Rayna Towles of the Bulldogs finished fifth and sixth.
• The boys cruised past second-place Negaunee. Hancock finished fourth. Again, Gremlins claimed half of the top-10 slots, with Birk Seagren first, and Isaiah Lawson fourth. Hancock’s David Bylkas placed 10th.

In high school volleyball tonight…
• Calumet hosts Negaunee. Coverage will begin around 6:10 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Houghton welcomes Iron Mountain. Coverage will start around 6:10 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Hancock entertains Westwood.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Watersmeet.
• Chassell welcomes Bessemer.
• L’Anse plays at Jeffers.
• Ontonagon visits Ewen-Trout Creek.

MLB

The MLB divisional playoff round continues.

In the National League yesterday…
• The Braves edged the Phillies 5-4. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Diamondbacks downed the Dodgers 4-2. Arizona is up 2-0 in that series.

Both of those series continue tomorrow.

In the American League today…
• The Rangers host the Orioles. Texas leads that series 2-0.
• The Twins entertain the Astros. That set is tied 1-1.

Catcher William Contreras has been named the Milwaukee Brewers’ Most Valuable Player for 2023. The Milwaukee chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America also voted him the team’s Top Newcomer. Contreras was obtained in a trade before the season started. He led the Crew with a .291 batting average and 38 doubles. Corbin Burnes was voted Brewers Pitcher of the Year for the third consecutive season.

NFL

Jordan Love threw three interceptions, as the Packers lost to the Raiders 17-13. Love completed just 16 passes for 182 yards. A.J. Dillon ran for 76 yards, and scored the Pack’s only touchdown.

The Lions will finish the season without cornerback Emmanuel Moseley. The team confirmed yesterday that he tore his right ACL during Sunday’s win over the Panthers. Mosely seeing his first action after missing nearly a year because of a torn ACL he suffered last season with the 49ers.
