In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet closed its regular season by beating Hancock 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-19).
– Houghton wrapped up its season with a 3-0 victory over West Iron County. Houghton and Calumet share the WestPAC title.
– Baraga defeated Ontonagon 3-1.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell v L’Anse – NR.
– Chassell v Ewen-Trout Creek – NR.
MTU Volleyball Falls to NMU
The Northern Michigan University volleyball team got off to a quick start last night, and cruised to a 3-0 victory over Michigan Tech. Northern opened a 9-2 lead in the first set, and won it 25-15. The Huskies made a bid to tie the match when they took a 22-18 lead in the second set, but the Wildcats came back to take it, 27-25. Northern dominated the third set, 25-14. The Huskies host Saginaw Valley State on Friday.
Finlandia Hockey Teams Projected Last
Both Finlandia University hockey teams are projected to finish last in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association this season. The preseason coaches’ poll places the men 10th out of 10… with Saint Norbert a solid choice to repeat as champion. Saint Norbert has won three of the last four NCAA Division Three titles. The women were voted seventh out of seven teams. Lake Forest College edged out Saint Scholastica for the top spot in the poll.
NHL – Red Wings Prepare for Capitals
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Washington tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Red Wings’ legend Gordie Howe is said to be resting comfortably after suffering a severe stroke on Sunday. Family members say his speech is slurred, and he’s lost a significant amount of function in the right side of his body. Family members have gathered at his daughter’s home in Texas, where the stroke occurred. Mr. Hockey is 86.
NBA – Pistons Ready for Season-Opener
The Detroit Pistons open their NBA season tonight at Denver.
MLB – Brewers Claim Jimenez
The Milwaukee Brewers have claimed third baseman Luis Jimenez off waivers from the Angels. Jimenez hit 20 home runs in the minors last season. The move provides an option if current third baseman Aramis Ramirez becomes a free agent.
The high school football playoffs begin this weekend. We’ll broadcast Calumet’s game at Harrison on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Hear Lake Linden-Hubbell’s home game against Bark River-Harris on 97.7 The Wolf. Pregame for each broadcast will begin Saturday afternoon at 12:40.
