In the Regional semifinals of the state high school hockey tournament last night, Houghton defeated L’Anse 7-1. Dawson McKay scored twice for the Gremlins. Calumet shut out Jeffers 8-0. The Gremlins and Copper Kings will meet for the Regional title tomorrow at 5:00 at MacInnes Arena. Our pregame coverage begins around 4:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear 102.com.

In the girls’ high school basketball tournament tonight…

In the final evening of boys’ regular-season basketball last night…
– Calumet fell to Escanaba 57-40.
– Houghton lost to Marquette 53-31.
– Jeffers defeated Dollar Bay 52-39.
– L’Anse lost to Westwood 63-50.
– Baraga got past Ontonagon 61-55.

Houghton dominates the 2014-2015 WestPAC All-Conference roster. Nate Gockenbach has been named Player of the Year, and Jared Lawson Coach of the Year. Sean Hyslop and Brad Ohtonen of the Gremlins were named to the first team. along with Jack Hyrkas from Calumet, Chad Raasio from Hancock and Brett Mattson from L’Anse. Second team honorees include Houghton’s Hunter Richards, Hancock’s Jared Peryam, Calumet’s Sam Kariniemi, and L’Anse’s Cody Clement. Jonny DesLauier and Ray Miron of the Purple Hornets received honorable mention votes. See the full roster here.

The top-seeded Michigan Tech women’s basketball team faces fourth-seed Grand Valley State in the semifinals of the GLIAC tournament tomorrow at noon. Third-seeded Ashland takes on seventh-seed Walsh at 2:30. The semifinal winners will meet for the GLIAC Tournament Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at 2:00.

Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan wrap up their regular hockey seasons with a home and home series this weekend. Game one will be played at 7:07 tonight at MacInnes Arena. Game two will be played tomorrow night in Marquette.

Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia baseball team continued its Florida trip yesterday with two losses to Alvernia University, 16-1 and 18-1. The Lions will face John Carroll University twice today.

The Finlandia softball team lost to Otterbein University 10-0 yesterday. The score of the Lions’ game against Roanoke College was not reported. The Lions meet Potsdam State University and Susquehanna University today.

Finlandia’s Amanda Youker has been named the Great South Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Youker hit .438 with two home runs at the Dome Tournament last weekend.

The Portage Lake Pioneers skate at West Bend tonight, and Fond du Lac tomorrow. The Calumet Wolverines visit Fond du Lac tonight, and West Bend tomorrow.

NHL – Red Wings Host Flames
The Detroit Red Wings host the Flames tonight. We’ll join the game after Houghton basketball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Visit Rockets
The Detroit Pistons play at Houston tonight.

Detroit Tigers Circle LogoThe Detroit Tigers fell to the Braves 6-4 yesterday. Alfredo Simon threw two hitless innings in his first start of the spring, and J.D. Martinez had three hits. The Tigers face the Mets this afternoon. David Price will make his first spring start. Hear the first pitch at 1:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Former Tigers reliever Phil Coke has signed a minor-league deal with the Chicago Cubs.

The Brewers dropped their spring opener to the Angels 3-2. Kyle Lohse gave up a run on one hit in 2-2/3rds innings. The Brewers face the Dodgers this afternoon.
