In girls high school tournament regional semifinal play last night…
– In Class B, In Class B, Houghton got past Kalkaska 61-57. Sloane Zenner led the Gremlins with 27 points, and made a critical steal off an inbounds pass with seven seconds remaining to help seal the win. The Gremlins will play Manistee in the regional championship game tomorrow night at Grayling. The Chippewas advanced with a 53-28 victory over Reed City last night. – In Class C, Calumet edged Negaunee 46-45 in overtime. The Copper Kings trailed by three with less than 10 seconds remaining, when Loretta Halonen grabbed a missed three-point attempt under the basket, sank a jump shot while being fouled, and then made the free throw to force the extra period. Hailey Wickstrom’s bank shot in the closing seconds of overtime was the game-winner. Watch video highlights from the game here. The Copper Kings will play St. Ignace tomorrow at 7:00 in Marquette. – In Class D, Chassell’s Cinderella run ended with a 55-40 loss to Stephenson. The Panthers hung tough through the first quarter, but the Eagles began pulling away in the second. Milly Hoskins scored 15 for Chassell. Stephenson’s Tori Wangerin led all scorers with 16.

In Fort Meyers, Florida, the Finlandia baseball team wrapped up its spring trip yesterday with two losses to Emerson College – 4-3 and 4-1.

A change at goaltender did not help the Detroit Red Wings last night, as they fell 5-3 to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Jimmy Howard stopped 27 of 31 shots, and took the loss. The Wings will host the Jets tomorrow night.

In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers edged the Tampa Bay Rays 6-5 yesterday. Shane Greene made his first start of the spring, and was touched for three runs on five hits before leaving with two outs in the third inning. The Tigers face the Nationals this afternoon. The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Chicago White Sox 10-6 yesterday. Starter Chase Anderson gave up seven runs in less than two innings. The Brewers will take on the Royals this afternoon.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson confirmed his retirement yesterday. Johnson released a statement in which he said he has played his final football game. He thanked the Lions and their fans for their support, and expressed confidence in coach Jim Caldwell and the team’s new front office leadership.
