High School
The MacInnes Holiday Classic opened with a pair of thrillers last night…
• In game one, Houghton overcame a four-goal deficit to edge North Fond du Lac 7-6 in overtime. Camden Markham got the Gremlins off to a good start with an early power play goal, but the Cardinals led 2-1 at the end of the first period. Markham scored again in the second frame, but Fondy increased its lead to 6-2. Houghton rallied in the third period, with power play goals from Gaborik Carlson and Brendan Miller, and even-strength tallies from Landon Stevens and Mike Marlette. Carlson’s second goal of the night finished the game five minutes into the extra period. Carlson, Markham and Kade Farrell each had two assists. Bryant Lee made 22 saves in net for the Gremlins.
• Game two, between Calumet and Hancock, was even closer. Paul Sturos gave the Copper Kings a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period. In the second period, a Dan Loukas goal increased the Calumet lead, but Hancock’s Todd Anderson scored twice to knot the score. Cam Anderson of the Copper Kings and Calvin Heinonen of the Bulldogs each found the net in the third period, which sent the game into overtime. After no one scored in the first extra period, Sturos netted the game-winner less than two minutes into a four-on-four second overtime. The final was 4-3.

College Football
COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc with the college football bowl schedule. The latest to be affected is Central Michigan University, which was scheduled to face Boise State in the Arizona Bowl Friday. Boise had to withdraw because of COVID concerns. CMU will now take on Washington State in the Sun Bowl Friday morning. The Chippewas will replace Miami of Florida, which also withdrew after a COVID outbreak. The Arizona Bowl becomes the fourth bowl game canceled because of the pandemic. The step up will be a major windfall for Central, which will earn $2.3 million for playing in the Sun Bowl, instead of the $175,000 payout for the Arizona Bowl.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball home game scheduled for Monday against Algoma has been canceled. The Thunderbirds’ athletic conference has paused all play until January 24th because of COVID-19 concerns.
