– Houghton won the Division One Boys U.P. championship yesterday at the Escanaba Country Club. The Gremlins finished two strokes better than Marquette, and four strokes ahead of Escanaba, to win their fifth title in the past eight years. Calumet placed fourth. Gladstone’s Rudy Peterson medaled, with Houghton’s Jiseung Choi three shots back in second place.
– Menominee took the girls Division One title yesterday at Sweetgrass, in Harris. Houghton finished fifth.

Brandon Dixon’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles last night. John Hicks’ homer an inning earlier had tied the contest. Ryan Carpenter turned in a decent start, allowing two runs over five innings. Nick Ramirez got the win with three scoreless innings of relief, and Shane Greene earned his 18th save.
The Tigers have today off, and begin an interleague set against the Braves in Atlanta tomorrow night. Spencer Turnbull will start against Mike Foltynewicz. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:55 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and begin a series against the Pirates in Pittsburgh tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Joe Musgrove.
NHL
The Saint Louis Blues edged the Boston Bruins 3-2 in overtime last night to tie the Stanley Cup series at one win per team. Game three will be played Saturday in Saint Louis.
NBA
The NBA championship series opens tonight, as the Golden State Warriors visit the Toronto Raptors.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team has added another player. Sheridan Brady is a designated hitter from Estacada, Oregon. He’s transferring in after two seasons at Ridgewater Community College in Minnesota.
Fishing
The 18th annual Knights of Columbus walleye fishing tournament will be held Saturday on Portage Lake, Torch Lake, and Lac la Belle. The tournament will include $3,000 in tagged fish, a $1,000 first place prize with payouts to five slots, and a biggest fish side pot. The cost is $45.00 per angler, with teams of two or more per boat. Register tomorrow at 7:00 at the Lakes Lounge in Lake Linden. Our high school softball tournament coverage continues tomorrow from Ironwood. Hancock meets the Gogebic Miners at noon Eastern Time, and Jeffers will face Ironwood at 2:30. Our broadcast will start at 11:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. We’ll also air the championship game at 5:30, if a local team is involved. On Saturday, we’ll cover Houghton and Calumet at their district baseball tournament.
