Houghton Boys Swimmers Cap Perfect Season – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school girls basketball last night…
– Calumet fell to Negaunee 46-40. Ava Anderson led the Copper Kings with 13 points.
– Hancock lost to Gwinn 57-41. Taylor Sebbas scored 22 for the Bulldogs.
– Chassell outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 55-25.
– L’Anse fell to West Iron County 57-46.

In boys action last evening…
– Calumet defeated Chassell 73-46.
– Houghton downed Jeffers 79-57.
– Hancock fell to Gwinn 53-45.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell beat Republic-Michigamme 54-39.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City outscored Ewen-Trout Creek 75-43.

On tonight’s schedule…
– The Jeffers boys welcome Republic-Michigamme in a make-up game from last Tuesday.
– The Houghton gyms are doing double duty, as the boys entertain Ishpeming, and the girls host Marquette. Both are make-up contests – the girls from Monday, and the boys from last Tuesday. For the boys, the freshman game will start at 5:45 in the Elementary Gym. The JV game will begin at 5:45 in the Middle School gym. The varsity game will tip off at 7:15 in the High School gym. For the girls, the varsity game will start at 5:45 in the High School gym. The JV contest will begin at 7:15 in the Middle School gym.

The Houghton boys swim team closed out an undefeated regular season with a 132-52 victory over Marquette yesterday. Kevin Beaghan won the 200-yard Individual Medley and the 100-yard Backstroke. Colton Haataja took the 50-yard and 100-yard Freestyles. The girls lost to Marquette 129-47.  See full results here.

Finlandia
Both Finlandia University basketball teams visit the College of Saint Scholastica tonight.

The Finlandia women’s team has been seeded second in the American Collegiate Athletic Association post-season tournament. They will open against third-seeded University of Valley Forge on February 23rd. The tourney will be hosted by Alfred State University in Alfred, New York.

MTU/NMU
Today is the first day on which Letters of Intent can be signed by high school athletes who wish to accept football scholarship offers from NCAA Division I and II colleges.

NBA
Blake Griffin scored 29 points Detroit Pistons defeated the New York Knicks 105-92 last evening. The Pistons will host the Knicks Friday. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Vegas Golden Knights tomorrow. Pregame coverage will start at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

Snowmobile
The Sno Valley Riders Snowmobile Club will hold its eighth annual Trailside Hot Dog Cookout Saturday between noon and 4:00. All snowmobilers are invited to stop at the clubhouse, along Trail Eight between Trout Creek and Bruce Crossing, roast a hot dog, and enjoy homemade cookies and hot chocolate.
