Houghton Boys Soccer Season Ends in District Semifinal – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…

  • Houghton swept Iron Mountain 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-16). Laney Johnson had five kills, 24 assists and three aces. Emmy Pietila recorded 23 digs.
  • Calumet dispatched Negaunee 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-22). Allie Bjorn had nine kills, two aces, and two blocks; Maddie Torola 12 kills, two aces, four blocks, and 10 digs; Jackie Kiilunen 14 kills, five aces and 20 digs; and Bella Coppo 30 assists.
  • Hancock defeated Westwood 3-0.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell blanked Watersmeet 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-14). Cleo Milkey had seven kills and 10 aces; and Payton Goldsworthy eight aces and 10 assists..
  • Jeffers downed L’Anse 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-22). Mia Nordstrom had 10 kills, six aces and two blocks; Reegan Kinnunen 11 digs and two aces; Taylor Heinonen seven assists; and Liz Halonen 10 assists, nine digs and four kills. 
  • Baraga downed Ontonagon – score not reported.

Tonight, Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Ontonagon.

The Houghton boys soccer team’s inaugural season ended with a 6-1 loss to Grayling in a district tournament semifinal contest yesterday. Ethan Heckel scored the Gremlins’ lone goal. 

NHL

The Red Wings will host the Rangers tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 7:15 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons conclude their brief pre-season campaign tonight at home against the Cavaliers. Listen for selected Pistons broadcasts again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Yankees downed the Guardians 6-3, as the American League Championship Series continued last night. New York leads the set 2-0, with game three set for tomorrow at Cleveland.

The National League Championship Series continues tonight, as the Dodgers visit the Mets. That set is tied 1-1. 

Brewers third baseman Joey Ortiz and outfielder Jackson Chourio were named to the MLB All-Rookie First Team yesterday. Tigers second baseman Colt Keith and outfielder Parker Meadows were placed on the Second Team.

Gold Glove Award finalists were also announced. They include Tigers catcher Jake Rogers, and Brewers second baseman Brice Turang, centerfielder Blake Perkins and right fielder Sal Frelick.

NFL

Lions defensive tackle Alim McNeill has agreed to a four-year contract extension, said to be worth $97 million, with $55 million guaranteed.

The Lions have officially placed pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson and defensive tackle Kyle Peko on injured reserve. They filled one hole by signing pass rusher Isaiah Thomas off the Bengals’ practice squad.
