The Houghton boys swim team won the Upper Peninsula championship yesterday, with a narrow 242-232 victory over four-time defending champion Marquette. The Gremlins used a strong overall performance to take the title, despite winning just one event – the team of Kevin Beaghan, Seth Helman, Leo Wheeler and Colton Hattaja claimed the 400-yard freestyle relay. Haataja and Wheeler finished second and third in the 200-yard freestyle, Beaghan placed second in the 200-yard medley, and Leif Odegard earned second-place honors in the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.

The defending champion Houghton girls team placed third in yesterday’s competition, behind Gladstone and Marquette. Samantha Olson won the 200-yard freestyle, and took second in the 500-yard freestyle. Autumn Sanders placed second in the one-meter dive.
