Houghton Boys, Chassell Girls XC Teams Honored – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Lake Linden Hubbell won both of its matches at last night’s triangular. The Lakes defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0 (25-11 25-16 25-17), and Dollar Bay 3-1 (25 -16 25-15 15-25 25-13). In the seven sets, Mariah Willmer recorded 29 kills, and Joslynn Perala had 30 digs. The Lakes finished unbeaten in league play this fall. In the other match at the triangular, Dollar Bay blanked Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0 (25-17 25-15 25-11).

– L’Anse shut down Ontonagon 3-0.

The volleyball playoffs begin next week.

The high school football playoffs kick off tonight, when Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at West Iron County. Our pregame show will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Tomorrow, Calumet plays at Traverse City St. Francis. Pregame will begin at 12:30 on KBear 102.3. Hancock plays at Menominee. Pregame coverage will start around 1:40 on 99.3 The Lift, and 993TheLift.com.

There will be a pep rally for the Bulldogs team tonight at 7:00 at the Hancock High School gym. All fans are invited.

The Houghton boys cross country team has been named the U.P. Boys Large School Team of the Year by the UP Cross Country Coaches’ Association. Houghton’s Clayton Sayen was named to the Boys Dream Team. The Chassell girls squad was named U.P. Girls Small School Team of the Year. Lela Rautiola of the Panthers was named to the Girls Dream Team.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team wraps up its regular season at the Benedictine University Eagle Classic. The Lions will face both the Milwaukee School of Engineering and the host Eagles this evening.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team begins its campaign at home against Sault College this afternoon. Faceoff is at 2:00 at the Houghton County Arena. The Lions will skate at St. Catherine University tomorrow afternoon.

The men’s hockey team will hold its annual Blue-White scrimmage tomorrow at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team wraps up its regular season at Wheaton College tomorrow night.

MTU
The Michigan Tech soccer team hosts Northern Michigan University this afternoon at 5:00 at Sherman Field.

The volleyball team plays at Saginaw Valley State tonight, and Lake Superior State tomorrow.

The hockey team skates at Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow night.

The football team entertains Davenport University tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The MTU women’s basketball team has been picked to finish first in the Great Lakes Athletic Conference North Division this season. The Huskies finished a single point ahead of Grand Valley State in the coaches’ poll released yesterday, with Northern Michigan University a close third. Brenna Heise of the Huskies was named to the Preseason All Conference Team. Ashland was picked to win the South Division.

The Northern Michigan University football team plays at Grand Valley State tomorrow afternoon.

NHL
Frans Nielsen scored twice for Detroit, but the Red Wings lost 3-2 to the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. Jimmy Howard made 35 saves. It was the sixth loss in a row for the Wings, who visit the Florida Panthers tomorrow night. Pregame will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons face the Clippers in Los Angeles tomorrow night.

MLB
The Houston Astros host the Los Angeles Dodgers, as the World Series continues tonight. Each team has won one game.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the the Ravens dominated the Dolphins 40-0, despite losing quarterback Joe Flacco to a concussion late in the first half.
