Houghton Boys, Calumet Girls Take WestPAC Meet
At the WestPAC Cross Country meet yesterday at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge…
– Houghton took an easy win on the boys’ side. Chassell finished second, and Calumet third. Houghton’s Jacob Colling was first individually, followed by Mitchell DeLong and Josh Larson from Calumet, and Abe Gockenbach from Chassell.
– Calumet took the girls’ title, with Chassell second, and Dollar Bay third. Calumet’s Leah Kiilunen finished first individually. Lela Rautiola from Chassell placed second… followed by Alexa Anderson from Calumet, and Madisyn Wright from Hancock.
In high school volleyball last night…
– Houghton defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-1.
– Calumet v West Iron County – NR

Michigan Tech
After a week off, the Michigan Tech football team puts its unbeaten record on the line at Northwood tomorrow afternoon. If you’re planning to make the trip, Northwood is hosting its International Auto Show this weekend, which will cause a lot of traffic disruption on campus. The Michigan Tech soccer team plays at Malone this afternoon, and at Lake Erie on Sunday at noon.
The Michigan Tech volleyball team entertains Tiffin at 5:00 this afternoon. They’ll host Ohio Dominican tomorrow afternoon at 3:00.
At the USTA/ITA Small College National Championships yesterday, the Tech women’s doubles team of Kwang Suthijindawong and Sandra Cvetanovic lost their first two matches – their first two losses of the season. They play one more match this afternoon. Find more about their matches here.

The Northern Michigan University football team plays at Malone tomorrow afternoon.
Finlandia University
The Finlandia men’s soccer team entertains Kuyper College this afternoon at 3:00, and tomorrow afternoon at 2:00.
The Lions’ women’s team plays at Mount Mary Sunday afternoon.
The Finlandia volleyball team plays at Maranatha Baptist Bible University tomorrow evening.
NHL – Red Wings Open With Win
Jimmy Howard gave up a goal on the first shot he faced… then blanked the Bruins the rest of the way, as the Red Wings opened their NHL season with a 2-1 victory. Justin Abdelkader and Gustav Nyquist scored for Detroit. The Wings will host the Ducks tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NFL – Colts Hold Off Texans
In last night’s NFL game, the Colts opened up a 24-0 lead in the first quarter… then held on to beat the Texans 33-28.
The Lions play at Minnesota on Sunday. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. Receiver Calvin Johnson, running back Reggie Bush, tight end Joseph Fauria and linebacker Travis Lewis all sat out of practice yesterday for the second day in a row because of injuries. Running backs Joique Bell and Theo Riddick, and cornerback Cassius Vaughn did participate.
Meanwhile, the Lions security staff has identified the person who used a laser pointer to try to interfere with Buffalo Bills players during last Sunday’s game. That person has been arrested, and banned from attending future events at Ford Field.
The Packers play at Miami on Sunday. That’s also a 1:00 kickoff.
NBA – Pistons Stifle Bucks
The Detroit Pistons defeated the Bucks 94-80 in preseason play last night. After giving up 29 points in the first quarter, Detroit’s defense clamped down and allowed just 29 points total in the second and third quarters. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led the Pistons with 20 points. Andre Drummond scored 15, and grabbed 16 rebounds.The Pistons will play an exhibition at Washington on Sunday. We will carry select Pistons games again this season on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
