High School
The Houghton boys dominated yesterday’s first cross country meet of the season at the Kilpela Farm, while the Calumet girls pulled out a narrow team victory.

The Gremlin boys easily outpaced second-place Gogebic. Calumet was third, followed by Chassell, Republic-Michigamme, Hancock and Jeffers. Houghton’s Nick Wilson placed first individually, 12 seconds ahead of Calumet’s Mitchell Delong.

The Calumet girls’ highest finisher was Greta Poyhonen in fifth place, but the Copper Kings clustered enough runners among the early finishers to edge out Houghton. Chassell was third, followed by Hancock, West Iron County, and Gogebic. Annabel Needham from the Gremlins finished first individually, five seconds ahead of Cami Daavettila from Dollar Bay.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers spotted the Chicago White Sox a three-run lead, then roared back to take an 8-4 victory last night. Detroit starter Daniel Norris needed more than 100 pitches to get through five innings. He gave up six hits – one of them a three-run homer to Todd Frazier in the second inning. The Tigers’ comeback began in the fifth, when Ian Kinsler hit a two-run homer. Detroit added four in the sixth to take the lead. The big blow was an RBI double by JaCoby Jones – his first Major League hit. The Tigers tacked on two more in the seventh on a solo shot by J.D. Martinez and an RBI single by Jones.

The Tigers wrap up that set against the White Sox this afternoon. Justin Verlander will start against Chris Sale. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Cleveland also won, so the Tigers still trail the Indians by four and a half games in the American League Central Division.

Jones was called up from Toledo before yesterday’s game. Casey McGehee was sent down. The Tigers also sent Matt Boyd to Toledo, and called up reliever Blaine Hardy. Both McGehee and Boyd are expected to be brought back tomorrow, when Major League rosters can be expanded.

Saupold

An MRI performed on Detroit center fielder Cameron Maybin’s injured thumb has revealed no structural damage. He’s considered day-to-day.

Tigers’ pitcher Warwick Saupold has been arrested on an assault charge. Saupold was involved in a brawl Sunday night outside a Toledo bar. He’s currently playing for the Mud Hens. Two members of the Indianapolis Indians were also arrested. The Indians are the top minor-league affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tigers’ officials say they’re monitoring the situation, but have taken no action.

Randal Grichuk’s RBI single off Corey Knebel in the 10th inning lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. The loss spoiled an excellent start by Wily Peralta, who gave up one run on three hits over seven innings. He struck out 10 batters.

The Brewers conclude that series against the Cardinals tonight. Matt Garza will pitch against Luke Weaver.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers have released punter Tim Masthay. Masthay spent six season with the Pack. He’ll be replaced by Jacob Schum, who was claimed off waivers from the Buccaneers yesterday.

The Detroit Lions have placed receiver Corey Fuller and tight end Brandon Pettigrew on the Injured Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list. They also signed linebacker Jayson DiManche, after he was waived by the Bengals.

Tom KearlyMTU
The Michigan Tech football team is preparing for its season-opener this Saturday against Walsh. Coach Tom Kearly says his Huskies are rounding into shape. “We’re a little bit away as far as some of the fine tuning – some of the things that take game-week preparation,” he said. “I guess I’m cautiously optimistic.” Kearly says it’s always a boost to start the season at home. “Our fan base has been good. With the pavilion filled, and those people ready to go an hour and a half before game time, it’s always fun to walk a football team into that stadium and see the excitement that’s brewing.” Kickoff is at 1:00 Saturday at Sherman Field.

Labor Day Bridge Walk
The annual UP Health System-Portage Labor Day Bridge Walk will begin at Kestner Waterfront Park in Houghton on Monday. Registration opens at 8:15, and the walk steps off at 8:30. The five mile course will take walkers across the bridge to Hancock, back over the bridge to the MTU campus, and then back to Kestner Park.

This is a fun, family event. There is no charge, but registration is required. Sign up on site before the event, or register online here.

Our high school football coverage continues tomorrow evening, when Hancock plays at Ironwood… and Saturday afternoon, when L’Anse visits Lake Linden-Hubbell. Hear both games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
