Houghton Baseball Earns First Tournament Title – Sunday Sports Wrap

 • Houghton won its first-ever tournament, taking the title at the Holiday Station Stores Invitational in Negaunee. The Gremlins defeated the host Miners in their opening game, 2-0, then downed Superior Central 8-3 in the championship match. Nick Horming was the winning pitcher in the first game, and Kade Farrell got the win in the title contest. Horming was named the tournament’s Defensive Most Valuable Player, and Brandon Norfolk was honored as Offensive MVP. Calumet lost its opening game to Superior Central 7-5. The result of the Copper Kings’ second game was not reported.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team closed out a winless season with 14-6 and 11-5 losses at Wisconsin-Stout Saturday. Josh Merced had three hits and drove in three runs in the opening game. Jordan D’Angelo had three hits in the nightcap. The Lions finish with a record of 0-36.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons conclude their season tonight at home against the Miami Heat. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL

In the first game of the NHL playoffs Saturday, the Capitals edged the Bruins 3-2 in overtime. Three other series open today – the Islanders visit the Penguins, the Golden Knights host the Wild, and the Panthers entertain the Lightning.

MLB

Harold Castro’s two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 9-8 victory over the Chicago Cubs Saturday. The comeback win came after Chicago scored once off Michael Fulmer in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the inning, Nomar Mazara’s single drove home Niko Goodrum, who had opened the frame at second base. JaCoby Jones pinch-ran for Mazara, stole second, and beat the throw to the plate on Castro’s looper to left field to win the game.

The Tigers conclude that home set against the Cubs this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will face Kyle Hendricks. Coverage begins at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit starter José Ureña was hit on the right leg, just above the ankle, by a batted ball in the second inning. He stayed in the game, but was removed in the third inning. Jeimer Candelario was hit on the knee by a pitch in the sixth inning, and also left the contest. Both are considered day-to-day.

The Milwaukee Brewers got just three hits in a 5-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves Saturday. Brett Anderson gave four runs over the first two innings, and left in the fourth.

The Brewers play at Atlanta again tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Huascar Ynoa.

Milwaukee has sent pitcher Eric Lauer down to Nashville. Hoby Milner has been brought up to replace him.
