Houghton Baseball Claims Title at Negaunee – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball, Houghton took the title at the Negaunee Invitational Saturday.
• The Gremlins downed Negaunee 6-1 in the first semifinal.
• Calumet defeated L’Anse 14-4 in the second semifinal.
• Houghton bested Calumet 12-2 in the championship game.
• Negaunee outscored L’Anse 19-3 in the consolation match.

NHL

NHL opening-round playoff action continued Saturday.

In the Eastern Conference…
• The Hurricanes edged the Bruins 3-2. Carolina takes the series 4-3.
• The Lightning shaded the Maple Leafs 2-1. Tampa Bay wins the set 4-3.

In the Western Conference…
• The Oilers blanked the Kings 2-0. Edmonton claims that series 4-3.

In the Eastern Conference this evening…
• The Penguins visit the Rangers. That series is tied 3-3.

In the Western Conference tonight…
• The Flames host the Stars. That set is tied 3-3.

NBA

The NBA conference semifinal playoffs continue today…
• In the Eastern Conference, the Bucks visit the Celtics. That series is tied 3-3.
• In the Western Conference, the Suns host the Mavericks. That set is tied 3-3.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers won their second straight game Saturday, blanking the Baltimore Orioles 3-0. Willi Castro and Eric Haase homered. Six Detroit pitchers allowed just four hits.

The parade of hurlers was necessary after starter Michael Pineda was hit on the hand by a comebacker off the bat of Ramón Urías in the second inning. Pineda left the game with a broken finger. He’ll join starters Casey Mize, Matt Manning and Tyler Alexander on the injured list. Manning could be close to returning after a good rehab start with the Toledo Mud Hens Friday. He’s expected to make one more start for the Hens. Mize struggled in a start Thursday with the Mud Hens, and has been returned to the Tigers’ training facility in Lakeland for continued rehab.

The Tigers host the Orioles again this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Tyler Wells. Coverage will begin at 1:20 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Miami Marlins 9-3 Saturday. Eric Lauer gave up four runs on three home runs in the fourth inning, and took the loss. Willy Adames and Hunter Renfroe homered for the Crew.

The Brewers play in Miami again this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will start against Elieser Hernandez.
