Houghton, Baraga Girls Advance in Hoops Tourney – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

Both the Houghton and Baraga girls basketball teams advanced to the state tournament regional finals with victories last night.
• In Division Two, Houghton outscored Kingsley 60-50. The Gremlins will play Big Rapids for the regional crown tomorrow at 7:00 at Petoskey High School. The Cardinals ousted Standish-Sterling 66-43 in the other regional semifinal.
• In Division Four, Baraga defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 47-39. The Vikings will face Norway for the regional title tomorrow at 6:00 at Marquette. The Knights eliminated Munising 46-41 in the other semifinal.

In boys basketball playoff district semifinals tonight…
• In Division Three, Calumet will play at Westwood. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Gwinn will face Ishpeming in the other semifinal.
• In Division Four, District 98, Jeffers will play at Baraga at 6:00 in one semifinal, and Lake Linden-Hubbell will tip off at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City at 6:00 in the other.
• In Division Four, District 97 at Ironwood, Ontonagon will face Ironwood at 7:00 CST. Bessemer and Wakefield-Marenisco will play in the other semifinal at 5:30 CST.

Jeffers dominates the All-Copper Mountain Conference boys honors this year. Levi Frahm was named Player of the Year. Ashton Kunishige and Tavin Larson shared Defensive Player of the Year honors. John Schutz was named Coach of the Year, and the Jets were named Team of the Year.

Frahm and fellow Jet Matthew Schutz were named to the All-Conference Dream Team, along with Gabe Popko from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Amos Norland from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Asher Garrison from Watersmeet, and Antonio DelFavero from Wakefield-Marenisco.

Shawn Gibbons from L’Anse joined Frahm, Schutz, Norland and Popko on the All-Copper Country Division First Team.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Blackhawks tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons lost a 119-117 heartbreaker to the Wizards last evening. Daniel Gafford tipped in a missed layup with a tenth of a second remaining to give Washington the win. Jaden Ivey scored 26 for Detroit.

The Pistons have dropped nine straight, and entertain the Hornets tomorrow evening. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit will likely finish the season without Hamidou Diallo, who limped out of Monday night’s game. He’s been diagnosed with a sprained ankle.

MLB

The Tigers routed the Cardinals 16-3 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Starter Matthew Boyd gave up a solo home run over three innings. The Tigers rapped out 19 hits, including eight doubles, and a late home run by Andre Lipcious.

The Tigers face the Nationals this afternoon. Eduardo Rodriguez will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers lost to the White Sox 5-2. Milwaukee will face Great Britain’s World Baseball Classic team today.
