– Calumet v Jeffers – no report.
– L’Anse took both ends of a doubleheader from Baraga. The Purple Hornets used a nine-run sixth inning to power their way to a 16-1 victory in the opener. Maegan Kraft went the distance to get the win for L’Anse, giving up just two hits, striking out six and walking none. The second game was closer, as the Hornets pulled out a 10-9 victory.

In high school baseball yesterday…

This afternoon…
– Jeffers plays at Calumet.
– Hancock plays at Houghton.

The Calumet baseball team plays a doubleheader at Wakefield-Marenisco tomorrow.

In track and field today…
– Calumet, Ontonagon, Bessemer, Ewen-Trout Creek, Houghton, Hurley, L’Anse, Wakefield-Marenisco and Watersmeet compete at Ontonagon.

The Cleveland Indians completed another sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 9-4 victory last night. Cleveland scored four times off Michael Fulmer in the first inning. Fulmer settled in to complete five innings, giving up just one more score in the fourth. Detroit scored three in the fourth on a home run by Nick Castellanos, but Cleveland put the game away with four runs in the eighth off Alex Wilson and Blaine Hardy.

The Tigers return home for a three-game set against the Rangers beginning tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Cole Hamels. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Cincinnati Reds scored five in the first, and two in the second, as they pounded the Milwaukee Brewers 9-5 last night. Chase Anderson went five innings, and took the loss. Alex Presley and Chris Carter homered in the late innings for Milwaukee.

The Brewers continue that series in Cincinnati this evening. Tyler Cravy will start for Milwaukee in place of Wily Peralta, who is away from the team after the birth of a daughter. Tim Adleman will counter for the Reds.

The Brewers have claimed left-handed reliever Michael Kirkman off waivers from the Padres. Kirkman pitched for Milwaukee’s farm club at Colorado Springs last season, before signing with San Diego.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, the Stars edged the Blues 3-2 in overtime. The Predators got past the Sharks 4-3 in triple-overtime. Each of those second-round series is tied at two wins per team.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Raptors slipped past the Heat 96-92 in overtime. That second-round set is tied at one win per team.

NFL
The Detroit Lions have signed wide receiver Andre Caldwell. He’s played eight years in the NFL, the past four for the Denver Broncos. The Lions have also signed four of their 10 draft picks, inking standard four-year deals with long snapper Jimmy Landes, defensive lineman Anthony Zettel, linebacker Antwione Williams and offensive lineman Joe Dahl.
